Hi Holly,
Great professional development plan. You are going to be surprised at how many different teaching tools you are going to have in a very short time using these methods.

Hi Sara,
To develop your skills as an educator continue on the path that your are. Use common sense as you approach the classroom. By using your previous instructors as role models you have a foundation from which to start. In this course the content is very basic and intended to help you feel comfortable in the classroom. Keep in mind the course content is intended to be a guide. You don't have to follow everything in the exact order it is listed. Again, use common sense in your planning. Use all of the graphic examples you can because no matter the learning styles the students have, it is effective for them since it allows them to use multiple senses in the learning process. If you have any specific questions I will be more than happy to answer them for you.

Sorting and filtering information that needs to be covered in a course, is one thing that I need more refining.
I think the main this is to be well organized and prepared and have a plan that allows you some structure as well as some room for constructive freedom.
I have been relying too much on lecture in the classes I have developed- because these are traditionally very small groups. I want to move more into visual/group work/ and I'm particularly fond of case studies to improve student interaction. And, during the lecture I try to create an atmosphere of interaction and discussion- but sometimes it has been difficult to get the students involved.
The steps that have helped me the most in enhancing my instuctional style are 1) See what other people are doing and talk to them about teaching methods 2) Always try new things 3) Get feedback from the students when you do try new things to find out if they found it to be helpful.
Am I the only one that feels like I don't know what I'm doing? I'm not a trained teacher like many of us out there and I go to these short, mandatory in-services for "training" like we all do. I feel the information is way over my head, using terms and educational techniques I don't understand. The people that teach these techniques are trained teachers, Master degree or PhDs and I have never had an education course in my life.
So my teaching style....I try to do what my favorite teachers did for me. I do not use much technology, I still draw pictures on a white board. I'm afraid I only get the visual and auditory learners attention. Hope we will learn a lot of techniques here.
Sara
Responsiveness to students; critical assessment of learning outcomes the previous quarter and student feedback; professional development forums; discussion with other instructors for best methodologies.
I could not agree with you more. Times are changing so are the methods for learning in regards to students.
I agree, as stated before students will notice if you are being "Fake" because you will come across as being nervous and start to become unfocused.
Observe a peer or another instructor as they teach in the classroom
Hi Ann,
What an excellent way of connecting with your students and customizing your instruction to meet their needs. These changes also help to keep you fresh and excited about your course. Keep up the good work.
Gary
I base much of my instructional style on the students I have in class. At the beginning of class I learn about them, how they study, and how and when they typically do homework. Each quarter it is amazing how much I learn regarding the lastest methods students use to study and comprehend material on their own. I have many strategies for studying, note taking and test taking that I offer to students but it also helps to talk with students about techniques they employ and share them with their classmates.
I also find it beneficial to read evidence based research articles about the new techquies that have been tested and proven beneficial for student learning. Since each group of students I have in class various from previous classes, I find it necessary to adjust my style based on their needs, levels, and interests.
I agree. Well said! Reflection is key to success, at least for me. I try to capitalize on momentum and learn from past mistakes. It provides an example for our students to follow.
Hi Andrew,
Listening is an essential part of being an instructor. By listening you know how to plan and support your students.
Gary
I find that it is so important to listen to my students, both in the classroom and online.
Hi Laurie,
As you continue to develop strategies for your class structure you will see how you can get more involvement from your students. Using learning groups and application methods will help to get the students in a more "hands on" method of learning.
Gary
Hi Tersea,
Learning about these advances is what not only keep you current in the field but it also keeps your interest up about the field. This interest and excitement will be seen by the students and will help to motivate them in their pursuit of their career.
Gary
I need to work more on giving time for the students to learn using the "hands-on" approach and allow them time to interact and discuss items more within the classroom setting. I tend to lecture too much and always feel that I have way too much information to provide to them in such a short amount of time.
I need to allow them the opportunity to take on more of the responsibilities of being an active learner!
Continuing education will always bring new knowledge of advances in the Veterinary World. Current journals and networking within the community will help as well
