A positive first impression is very important when starting a new class. If a teacher comes into the classroom completely unprepared the students are not going to think well of the teacher. If a teacher appears confident and knowledged about the subject they are to teach this will let the students know that this class is important and they are ready to teach the students.

Hi Walter,
One of the things besides being well prepared and having my materials posted up is to start off with a discussion session where the students start communicating with each other and myself. I base the discussions on how their previous experiences are going to contribute to their course success. They like to see the connection as well as it helps them to feel more comfortable since they get to talk about themselves in relation to the course. This helps the students to get to know each other better by reading their comments.

Hi Kelly,
Right you are. What are some of the techniques you use to get your classes off to a good start?
Gary

The first positive impression is being on time. Not arriving at the last minute. You should set up and be ready at lease 30-45 minute before class starts. The students should never see you set up your equipment/presentation.

What are the important positive first impressions for online classes?

It gives students a starting point in their relationship with you. No one likes to start something new and feel badly about it. The same goes for a class. No student likes to leave the first day dreading coming back for the next 10 weeks, semester, year whatever! Starting out on the right foot will encourage students to return to your class, ready to learn!

To make a connection with students and get them interested and involved in the learning process from the start!

I agree. Setting an example is key to motivating students to perform at a higher level. If they see the professor is serious, knowledgeable and cares about them, they will be motivated to perform at a high level!

It puts students at ease and gets them motivated to start the class. If they feel they are motivated and like me and course, they will perform at a higher level.

Respect is gained or lost with the first impression. As I prepare to enter my first class, that is at the top of my priority list.

First impressions are huge because they show what type of person you are. Whether it is just a smile or a nice gesture, it will show everything there is to know about you.

A positive first impression sets the tone for the class. it makes your students feel confident with your teaching and expertise. If a poor first impression is made the students may not value your opinions and thoughts.

Making a postive first impression is so important to many things you will do in life. I find the best way is to be prepared and even have a plan B, just in case. Being preapared not only lets your audience know that you are serious about what you are doing, but preparing/practicing ahead of time may help ease your own anxiety or nervousness. Having a checklist makes sure you stay on track. If you are focused, then you set that atmosphere for the entire audience. Staying focused and on track allows you to be efficient and accomplish your goals.

I totally Agree with you, Jane.
"Practice what you'r preaching" wright?

First impressions set the stage...... we are the person that will guide and instruct the student... we will nagivate them through the course. If we appear unprofessional, unorganized, uncaring, and not at all enthusiastic about the course how can we ever expect the student to be??

Getting the student trust and comfort is very important to me, first impression is everything and I know I only have a moment to make my class like me. I leave all my personal busness at home and get into my classroom with a smile on my face and a willing to have another positive day.

I agree. Trying to "win back the crowd" is very difficult. It is even possible that a student will transfer out of that class to find an instructor who seems to be more compatible. Also, your preceived reputation is carried on from student to student as an unfriendly, etc. instructor.

It fosters respect between the students and the instructor.

Hi Greta,
What are strategies that you use to help you make a positive first impression with your students?
Gary

It sets the tone for the rest of class

A positive first impression helps the students relax and become more compfortable with the course they are about to get involved in.
