In my experience, students are relieved to see a physical example of a successful piece of course work so they can understand what's expected of them and how to proceed on the assignement. In addition, I have a lot of competitive students where I teach, and they often seem to enjoy commenting on student examples with the ways in which they would do even better work! I like to hear them challenging themselves to not only fulfil but to exceed the course expectations. Setting a benchmark is a huge help.

I find that showing the studnets exaples of what is expected of them makes it clearer to teh student as to what I am looking for in terms of finished projects from them.

Giving the students an idea of what they are going to be doing in class will increase the excitement that they will feel for the class. Sharing past projects from other students also gives them ideas when it come time for them to work on projects in class. There are many talented students and by not using their work is just a waste, so why not share with future classes.

Hi Beverly,
Students love it whenever they have a guide to follow. It really does ease anxiety.

Hi Tracy,
The internet can be such a valuable teaching tool for almost any subject matter. After all, it is a techological-driven world.
Patricia

Use the internet to show examples, do not do death by power point , get them on their feet and take them to tear something apart to physically see what the relavance is of the subject you are covering

Yes in todays world if it can not pertain to the working enviroment it will have no meaning to a adult student, so keep it simple but challenging

I truely believe that. I know that if I was in the learning atmosphere and sitting in the students seat that I certainly would appreciate examples.

I agree with you Victoria, with adult learners their time is so limited, we need to keep things clear so the student does not waste endless time trying to figure out what is required or expected.

I agree the majority of students do want to provide what is required and expected, by giving an example it can guide a student and relieve anxiety and frustration.

I attended a college that allowed instructors freedom that led to confusion and frustration for the students. All us students wanted to supply what was the expectation and requirement of the instructors, but if it varies it can make it very difficult. When the instructor was questioned she would refer the student to the syllibus and not clarify. Was very frustrating.

Once again, Giving examples of work that is going to be expected from the students is a great idea. Just one more thing that I never considered. I am not a seasoned instructor. I have only been teaching for 14 months, so this is all still new to me. These modules are a great way for me to improve. Thanks for all of the great input everyone.

To show the student what your expectations are for the course. Examples clearly set the standard for attention to detail that will be expected.

Showing examples of student work allows for clarity of what is expected in a course as far as assignments and exams, this facilitates comfort and assurance to students.

To make then feel more comfortable with the course by knowing what is expected of him or her.
Examples shown by the course instructor gives one a greater clarification and takes out the guesswork especially for upcoming assignments and exams.

You want students to see the goal that they are working so hard for. It brings their goal that much closer to their current reality.

Hi Randy,
Visual gives students the belief that yes I can do this, and they are motivated to do it.
Patricia

Hi Jeanne,
Showing students examples can give them a push to get started. Give students a speil about using their creativity to create their project, let them know their project is not to look like yours or else...
Patricia

Showing examples informs Students what is expected.

The classic case I will show students is soldering I will demostrate how to do this with the soldering irons they have then I will take a electronic piece apart and show them when and where they will do this and use this valuable skill.
