Students often feel like they are just "out there" when it comes to assignments. Having examples can not only illustrate a path to take, but also illustrate what instructors are looking for to satisfy course requirements. Examples can become a tool for the facilitation of learning.

For each clinical orientation, I have visual examples and explainations: copies of the careplans for students to see still when I receive their assigned care plan after 3 weeks of clinical rotation; I find inaccurate data in few careplans.
Could you suggest, how this issue can be solved.

Grading rubrics are a great tool in helping the students to understand what the expectations are for a project and they also come in handy when a student tries to challenge a grade. Showing examples of student work also helps in my field because design students are often very visual and seeing what is expected instaed of reading it helps them to grasp the ideas more clearly.

Nancy you are correct.I sometimes give students examples or I post the examples in our computer system so they will have access to it all the time.

Thought of a portfolio that the studnet would work on and present at the end of each class?

Showing students examples of the work they will be doing in the upcoming course helps students understand what is expected of them so that they are not confused and can plan and prepare for the course.

If the assignments are well-designed, it can also help students see the relevance of the course material to their career goals.

It gives them an idea to go off of. It allows them to create their project based on something that has already been done.

Re: showing examples of student work,
An instructor provides a visual model as a benchmark for the student.
The Students are better able to :

- understand criteria for achievement.
-To view standards and procedures of expectations.

Teaching digital media- students really need visual benchmarks. Not only does viewing samples, in this case photographs , allow students to question specific technical aspects but, also concepts for compositions.
I also show Master Photographers and technique of photos.
This seems to help.
I wish we could access ARTSTOR

Examples are a wonderful tool for teaching. Many students are visual learners. Learning from seeing and doing helps students to retain the information and is easier for them to recall it when tested or when application is required.

it provides them concrete objective examples of what they will be doing and reduces stress of unknown.

The main reason to show students examples of the work they will be doing in the upcoming course is to give them a better understanding of what is to come. They can ask questions and get to know the requirements this way, as well.

They can get a good idea of what to expect and what an A looks like. They understand what it takes to do the project, furthermore some students are visual learners.

So they have an idea of what your looking for.

I have noted how smooth the transition is for the class to go from hearing me lecture to applying what they learned. They seem to be comfortable.

Hi Marshall,
Confidence is everything. Students really do believe the assignment is very achievable once they see the finished product of another student's.

It will help them have a map for direction; I like to tell, show and allowe them to do.

It can help to set expectations for the student and build a sence of confidence that they can do this.

Hi Lisa,
I always remove the student's name from the assignment, but getting persmission is always the best thing to do.
Patricia

I agree with you Miguel; however, I always ask a student if they mind their work being used as an example. Sometimes I may use some of the work I have done in past classes.

Lisa

It gives them a road map to what they will be learning.
