Hi Therese,
I use previous examples of classes work to show. I never include the student's name. I do not allow critiquing. I show a perfect example so that the students will know what to expect.

It shows the student the finish line. They may not know how to prepare financial statements yet, but it shows them what the final results will look like as they are learning.

Students feel more confident if they see examples of successful student work. Their anxiety and procastination will be reduced.

It is a good idea because it will give students a better idea of how to do the assignment correctly.

I always ask permission from students but initially utilize student work in discussion anonymously. Eventually, students can determine who's work is being critiqued. But, initially, it prevents embarrassment or frustration. It, however, is comforting to students to realize that they are all in the same boat.

Students really do perceive things differently. Examples cut down on confusion.

Many times an adult learner is in class for the first time in many years. They know things have changed but not necessarly how much. By viewing acceptable work from a student, the mystery is gone. They tend to do better.

After I ask a student permission to show his or work to others they tend to get excited in other classes and do well. Word gets around and other students want to be recognized and become one of those who is asked to have his or her work shown to others. It is an exciting contagion.

Learners tend to be nervous about the upcoming class, and what will be expected of them. In order to give the learners a complete snapshot of the work they will do and what they will accomplish throughout the course, not only gives them a guideline to follow, but lets them see all of the amazing things they will/should be able to do successfully by the end of the course.

Every student has his own individualised reasoning, and perceive instructions in their own way. Giving an example makes them focus on the Instructor requirements for getting better scores.

This will allow the student to understand visually what is expected from them. This will also hopefully promote a feeling that the assignment is attainable as other students have completed it and gives them ideas on how to progress with the assignment.

They need to see the results of what we are teaching to be motivated.

It can show them for one what your expectations are and how they can surpass that. It can also serve to motivate them into creating something different and actually putting the work into it.

So students can have an idea of how the job is done correct

Students simply get excited by seeing examples of work. It gives them something to really look forward to, and it lets them know that the project is doable.

Student can see what they will be accomplishing over the course of the term, and throughout their program. Often, they are amazed at what they can actually accomplish, especially in the legal classes, where they create trial notebooks, legal documents, and case briefs. In Business courses, the students can see great examples of a marketing or business plan, and see how that will benefit them in their future goals.

I believe that the students need to feel comfortable with the class and the instructor. All questions and doubt need to be addressed to help make the student ease anxiety and fear.

An example gives them a clear concrete view of what is expected and leaves less room for confusion. It also helps to alieviate any concerns the student might have.
