The information is necessary for the strudents to know plus the unprepared students will know you are serious and very interested in their learning. It also allows you to see if they understand the material covered

Hi Mark,
Each student wants to feel they matter, and as instructors we should care about our students enough to let them know that we geniunely care.
Patricia

Follow up is critical to future learner success. Follow up gives the facilitator opportunity to identify any issues/problems and make neccessary corretions. Follow up also serves as a tool to help learners understand the importance of assignments. a lack of follow up will probably be setrrimental to learner progress & success.

It shows that you show interest in what the students are doing. Just a little personnel interest can go a long ways toward be a professional educator.

Hi Betty,
As educators we should have the students success at heart. I like how you make an effort to try to help students manage their time.
Patricia

In the online class it's vital that assignment due dates are met. Online classes move very quickly and it's easy to fall behind. If a student is late with on week's assignment then it throws them behind and it can take the rest of the quarter to catch up. We try to be very proactive regarding assignments and email students the very first week if they haven't submitted an assignment. Helping students to manage their time and letting them know you are aware when they don't turn in their work are two ways to help them get their assignments completed on time. This contributes to them having a successful quarter.

Following up is good it helps to make sure that we are all on the same page.

Hi Amanda,
Timeliness is very crucial in education. Our students need immediate feedback as to how they are doing.
Patricia

Timely follow up on student assignments gives our students valuable feedback and allows them to learn further from our comments and advice.

I think it also creates accountability. The student has to realize the importance of being accountable for actions both in the classroom and at work.

Hi Jeanette,
Pop quizzes are not a bad teaching tool. A lot of instructors have gotten away from the old school pop quizzes.
Patricia

Excellent idea and one that should be utilized often. If given the chance, students will do thier homework in class that they should have come prepared for prior to class. Pop quizzes will keep the students on track and better prepared overall for lecture as well.

Our classroom time is so short considering the information that needs to be covered. I used to assign reading for homework so the students would get familiar with the content before we discuss it in class. Most of the students wouldn't even bring their books home. I got smart and started giving pop quizes on the reading assignments and it really worked! They actually started reading on their own and saved me a lot of time in the classroom.

To ensure that the student engages thoroughly with the class learning objectives and understands the material sufficiently to ask questions on difficult items that may need further clarifaction from the teacher.

This shows the students that each assignment is taken seriously, that way the students will be prepared and turn assignments in in a timely manner.

It is vitally important for students to receive regular and timely feedback regarding their understanding, or lack thereof, of the course material. Failing to follow up on assignments in a timely manner removes that critical opportunity for feedback and leaves the student unsure of the extent of his matery of the course material.

As human beings, none of us is perfect with our memory, so to take it from that approach, we can all do with a "friendly reminder" or two to keep us on track.

I found an article that said that people need to be exposed to a message at least 8 times in order to remember it fully. Imagine how an instructor could become frustrated when students won't remember the previous lecture materials because they did not hear it multiple-times.

It is also extremely important that instructors be "active" in their involvement with their struggling and challenging students. These students may need extra assistance because they have been treated poorly in the past. I think it is only fair that each instructor take those opportunities to embrace it as an "opportunity" to develop someone who can be great.

Finally, it also shows the challenging students that you are serious about their success, and that you are not going to give up on them. Even if they do not succeed, at least the instructor can say they did all they could to help the student.

Hi Jeff,
Absolutely! As instructors we should want to know if our students are grasping the concept or not.
Patricia

It demonstrates that I am serious about classwork. In general, I like to use humor to make my points in class. Sometimes students interpret that as "it's ok to skip the homework - she's easy". By announcing in the first class that homework assignments will count as a percentage of their grade, and showing them how that percentage can bump them from an A to a B, it sends the message that doing the work is an easy way to keep up their grade.

There are a couple of reasons why it is important to follow up on assignments with students. One it helps keep then engaged in the learning process and on track. It also give the instructor an opportunity to check in with students individually and see if they need guidance or assistance.
