lost students in your class, students that are missing things, both in class and pssibly in lab.i believe i do a pretty good job monitoring my classes include looking ,body counts in lab etc.i constantly look for students that are not on track or appear to not be on track, again whether it is lab or classroom.

I do monitor my class. Monitoring is very important. Students know it from the start and it is much better learning environment.

Hi Jerry,
An instructor will always be in the "KNOW" from all perspectives whenever classroom monitoring is taking place. It is amazing what you see, hear, etc. whenever monitoring is occurring. A student can/will take advantage of the instructor, if monitoring does not take place.

Hi Gregory,
The vast majority of your students do not want chaos. The vast majority of your students want structure and control. You are on point, students are paying for their education, and they truly want all they can get, and they want an evironment that is conducive for learning.
Patricia

If you are not monitering your students it can get out of hand quickly and be disruptive along with losing respect of other students that expect you to keep everything under control. I have had success in monitering my students by moving around the class, picking up on signs of loss of attention, or just not focusing on the task at hand. Bringing these students back on task will benefit them and also the other students that are focused

Hello Dennis,
Poor monitoring can destroy a class. Students really become frustrated whenever an instructor does not take control of the classroom.
Patricia

When you poorly monitor your class for behavior and learning you are setting the stage for chaos. The students want limits and guidelines to follow that mirror being successful in their lives and careers. Adult students also want the training they are paying for. I attempt to constantly challenge my students and give them numerous chances and situations to succeed. Lab practicals, as an example; show if they are really individually able to perform the required tasks they need to learn by themselves. I see alot of value in the suggestions in this module for student monitoring and discipline and plan to use some of them in the future.

The effects of poor monitoring can cause chaos in the course, which can lead to total confusion for all and course failure/ Drop out for some.

Once again it would depend on the class types. As I have stated before There are certain types that I find more challenging and they tend to pull the discussion away from topic. These are the Center stage types and the negative attitude types. This aside, I feel that I do monitor and adjust behaviors as needed. As I learn more and more from these forum discussion and other instructors about this subject, I feel that I will be completetely effective instead of 85% effective. I am constantly learning and trying new techniques for these types of students.

Hi Kenneth,
Monitoring a class is hardwork, but it must be done. If an instructor does not monitor his or her class, he or she does not have any idea as to what is going on. Students even know when a class is being monitored or not.
Patricia

Hello Bob,
Consistency is key. You and I have very similar philosophies of teaching. Consistency does bring respect from your students. By being consistent, your students always know what to expect.
Patricia

Hi James,
A role of the instructor is to fully monitor their students. As an instructor, you should always know where each of your student is in the learning process. I teach Keyboarding a lot, and I can always tell you how many words my students are typing, their accuracy, their weak points, etc. I make it a point to become solely involved in my students learning process. You should want to know how your students are progressing.
Patricia

monitoring a class takes a lot of work, it is more then the test they take, are they understanding the class infromation, do they do well in lab do they get along with the other students ? and yes i think i do a good job of monitoring my class

This is something that I always try to stay on top of.I would have to say that by trying different techniques, all of which happen to be listed in the course, I feel I am doing a good job. The best advice I can give a fellow instructor is to BE CONSISTENT! By doing this, you students will have more respect for you and the way you handle yourself in the class. It also means you must apply yourself the same in similar situations. By doing so your have just made your job a whole lot easier!

The adverse effect of poor student monitoring is that you dont know where you class is atin the learning proess or what is going on with them. you need to see if they are getting the subject matter or if they have a learning or personal peoblem. I belive I keep a close eye on the class when I greet them I see how they are if the is some question of a student not responding I take that further in private to see if all is ok and if there is any thing I can do to help the student.

Hi Salvatore,
It is unreal what a seasoned instructor can teach an inexperienced instructor. Take advantage of those seansoned instructors at your educational insitution and pick their brain. They can truly teach you the tricks of the trade. You are right, the longer you teach, the better you will become in every area, and it includes controlling the classroom also.
Patricia

Hi Clayton,
Great points made. The reason why students ask more questions when you are up and moving versus asking more questions when you are seated because they feel that they are bothering you when you are seated. Students should never feel like they are a bother to instructors, therefore, keep being mobile and accessible to your students.
Patricia

I think that the longer I teach the better I get at this maintaining good group sizes in lab and being aware of what the students are up to in lab is always a challenge. In the class room it is much easier to maintain structure and control and keep everyone on task. When a lab day is over it sometime feels like you’ve run a marathon, but watching the lights go on as the students start to understand what you’ve been talking about is the fun part. Good monitoring and control is what makes it possible for learning like that to take place. Further more I found that sharing ideas and observing other instructors has taught me more about monitoring and control than anything else.

I believe that if I do not monitor the class, students do not receive all that they could. I have noticed that if I monitor and move about the room, especially when its quiet and students are doing computer work, students are more likely to ask questions. I feel that if I did not move about the room, several of these students would not have asked questions. I visually monitoring lets me know where I should be. I believe I still need to work to be most effective at monitoring.

Hi Peter,
You are on point. Monitor your classroom so that problems do not escalate.
Patricia

Poor student monitoring will cause small problems to become large unmanageable problems.
