Hi Brenda,
What type of classroom measures do you utilize to minimize cheating during test taking time?
Patricia

Hi Trish,
I like the idea of having a different test for absent students. I use the same test, but I do deduct 10 pts. for late tests. Is you test for late students any more challenging than the regular test.
Patricia

One problem I have encountered when using multiple versions of the same test is that it makes doing a test validity study quite a bit more time-consuming.

Hi Halina,
When they see you looking at them, they get nervous, and just by them knowing you are watching them, really minimizes cheating.
Patricia

Hi Melissa,
Super idea, these items have been used to cheat with. Make sure the desk is clear of any unneeded materials.
Patricia

Hi Stephen,
It is important to update exams because questions leak out and sometimes even exams grow legs.

Technology advancement- in particular cell phones, blackberrys, etc. has proven to be yet another venue to access information. I have encountered a couple instances that students were attempting to use these devices to "help" on tests. It is made clear at the beginning of each quarter- and reinforced thereafter- that ALL materials including cell phones are not accessable during test time. I position myself in one spot to enable my view of the entire classroom. In the event a student is absent the same test is not given.

When creating exams, I create several versions of the test. They have the same questions, but in different orders. I then make sure that nobody sitting near someone else has the same version. I also state at the very first exam that any suspicious activity will be taken as an attempt to cheat, no exceptions. I have never had a cheating issue.

Things I would do to reduce students cheating is,inform the students there will be a test, review all the material then let them know how important it is for them to pass this test and if they have any further question on the material please feel free to ask for help then talk to the about how to prepare themselves for the test 1.go over the material, get plenty of rest the night before, eat a healthy breakfast then come to school pepared.

I use 2-3 different test versions, move from front to back of the room and occasionally walk to random areas of the room. At times, I'm fortunate enough to have another faculty in the room to help me proctor.

Hi Christina,
It is great you have that flexibility to have another instructor to help watch while testing if you have a large class. I let my students know that you are being watched. Simply by them knowing they are being watched, it helps minimize cheating.
Patricia

walking around the room. Making sure all loose papers and books are put away. No phones on the desk.

Hi Dave,
I understand your perspective. I am thinking about various certification tests, I do not know of any certification test that will allow you to use notes and the book while taking the test. Everything for a certification tests is recalled from memory.
Patricia

Hi Halina,
Great strategies, they really work. I make sure to have my students clear their desk entirely.
Patricia

Hello, I also practice this. By using differnt versions of the test & walking around the class room keeping a close eye on the students the students are aware that I am looking for cheaters.

i put a space between each student and make them wear short sleaves or roll up there sleeves on test day.

Hi

This is exactly what I do if I have a large group of students. I do not always let my students know there are multiple tests. I have caught people cheating from doing this.

If I have a small group, I usually put them apart from each other during the test taking.

Hi Randy,
You're right! They are trying to determine also the perfect opportunity as to when they can cheat. The instructor has to be smarter than the cheater.
Patricia

I believe that if given the opportunity to cheat most students will. I make students sit apart from one another and I sit in the back of the room. Sometimes I get up and walk around to let the students know that I am present and watching. If I have a large class I will get another faculity member to help monitor the class while taking a test.

Hi Lynn,
I like the activity and the whole purpose of it.
