I was reminded from the readings in this section how important it is to make individual contacts with students and to talk to all of them at some point to get a sense of how they are doing and how they feel about the class. Just last week by doing this I learned one of my students was a high school student take college night classes.
Hi Craig,
You are right! Our students need to know that we care, and they matter to us.
Patricia
Every student should feel that you take an interest in them and their learning process.
Every student in the class should feel valued and welcomed, even if you have a large class.
The student is making a commitment to you and the school by their attendance, so as instructors, we need to be committed to each student as well.
Student interaction is critical because it enhances the learning environment and keeps the students engaged. It goes along with utilizing their personal experiences as they apply to the topics being discussed and personalizes the material to directly apply to them.
Hi Arlene,
Discussing topics of this nature is fine as long as you can maintain control.
Patricia
Students at the career college have distinct goals. Interaction allows them to express those goals and allows the instructor to bring those topics into the class when it is appropriate.
Hi Kerry,
This is the one part of my job that I love as an instructor. I absolutely love communicating/interacting with the students. My students have taught me a lot over the 21 years I have been teaching, not about academics, but about life in general...they know how to survive.
Patricia
Meaningful interaction is probably the reason I teach!
Sharing the knowledge and techniques necessary to successfully participate in the occupational field that I myself choose, is probably the reason I get up excited every day.
To not interact with every student in my classes would be to potentially deny them access to the career that has inspired and sustained me my entire adult life...and that would be so unfair!
Hi Rufino,
It sure does. If students feel as though they know you or are at least feel comfortable with you, they will open up to you. Trust and respect go along way.
Patricia
That helps to create trust and respect.
Students need to feel that they are valued, that we care for them and at the same time intructors will greatly benefit from this interaction because we can find the root of certain behaviors.
Hi Judy,
I agree! As instructors, we should make it a point to interact with all students everyday. I make it point to greet and make small talk with all of my students daily.
Patricia
I believe that every student should feel that they have something to offer the class, because they do.
Each and every time someone is discounted, they lose more and more confidence. It is so important that everything someone says or does is noticed in a positive way.
It is important to have interaction with every student so that they feel important and feel that you the instructor cares about their learning process and progression.
Interacting with students is important in many ways.It helps them to feel that they really are part of the class, gives positive outcome even for very shy students. Also consistent interaction makes them to fully participate during group discussions. From my personal experience I could tell that when you choose an interesting topic which intrigues imagination of each of them , then you realize the positive effect of the interaction. On the other hand interaction makes them to feel that you really care about them .
I have found that involving students keeps them interested and more eage to learn. Many times it helps the students who are shy learn how much they have to offer and conribute to the class. This helps with their self esteem.
Communications between an instructor and the student provides for a better classroom atmosphere. When students feel they are an active part of a group they come to class with more enthusiasm. As an instructor I make it a point to talk to each student in my class every time we meet.
