The one thing that stands out to me is the different types of online learners that disrupt the classroom. You think about and are prepared in a traditional classroom but the online environment brings another set of challenges. I think it is essential to make sure you address those issues immediately and by school policy.
The modules I have completed have enlightened me on how to better service my students both in the classroom and online. I realize that disaplinaries will be found in online students as well. Emails are a vital tool and folders to collect student data should always be part of planning.
How to manage and conduct your class online. There is alot to know and learn and to me it will be a challenge but something else for me to grow as a CTE. I get the most out of hands on training so I need to focus on e-learning.
I think this module, Module 4, gave a lot of great tips for ensuring the overall success of the class or program that is being run by the instructor as well as a lot of great time management and organizational tips that will save the new instructor a great deal of time, when setting up and running their first few classes. I thought the tips in the Behvior Management section were very infomative about the types of behavior problems / or personality types we might be facing, as well as measured strategies and responses for dealing with each type of personality or problem. The Attrition Managment section was also well thoughtout and documented. Having been an online student for two full years in a row (course-after-course, no breaks) while working two jobs was very stressful and exhausting for me, but I also saw other students dropping out of class for a wide variety of other reasons.
The most beneficial thing I got out of this section are the numberous ways to address issues that arise with any e-learning environment. For every identified situation of learner style, multiple strategies were shared to help the instructor move forward while keeping the e-learner egaged.
I didn't even think of counseling and behavior management and was very happy they are included in this section.
I will definalty be reviwing my courses and check them for these aspects.
Communication is key to helping learners focus on the learning through identifying problems and offering solutions.
I learned it is important to save all chats. This will help to ensure that the question was answered in a timely manner and also may be helpful in future online classes to ensure that any questions asked in previous years are in the FAQs section of your outline of the course. This part of the class should be updated each time a new question is asked to help you make sure everyone is clear of expectations and all general questions are addressed/don't need to be reanswered so much. I plan to update the FAQ section with real questions asked (no names mentioned of course) to make sure everyone is clear on what is being asked.
Reply to Dianna Baltosser's post:That annoys me, too. I don't feel comfortable when students drop my classes and try to assist them back in.
I learened about different types of students and how they should be handled. I should learn about the institiution code and apply them in my courses whenever it is needed.
Keeping good records, firm rules, as well as communication, will help towards a great E-learning environment even if students either are difficult or easy to work with.
Making sure that as a teacher,r I am able to communicate well with students via email and organizing those records. I have learned from the reading is sticking to rules and regulations of the course, but be flexible enough to handle delicate situations. Monitoring behavior conducive to a learning environment and addressing any disruptive behavior is important while adhering to the rules while working online. As a teacher, we may have to counsel a student. It is appropriate to make sure there is a safe place in doing so.
This course taught me about diffrent types of learners, why some students chose to leave the e-learning course. It has shown me how it can be difficult at times to instruct on line as it is in class due to the same disrubtions a student can give.
I find that you must continually remind students of assignment submission expectations and the consequences of late work.
It is also important to model proper email communication.
This module was a great refresher for types of learners and the best way to interact and engage them. I will employ more documentation to help alleviate challenges for the student and myself.
I learned some ways to deal with different types of student behaviors in an online setting.
Many of the challenges to online instructors in the areas of classroom management, conflict resolution, and communication are quite similar to those in a physical classroom. The various personalities encountered are the same, and must be handled in much the same way.
From this module I learned that there are many facets to managing an online course. Prior to this module I did not think about all of the behavior issues that could arise from this type of learning environment. For myself I plan to utilize the information from the Records Keeping section to make sure issues do not slip through the cracks. I plan to keep records based on the type of management issue that is encountered. Folders in an email system could be used to organize, and then color coding messages to indicate whether the issue is resolved or needs further monitoring after initial resolution are a couple of quick to use options that could be utilized.

This Module 4 really helped me in examining guidelines for setting up an information management system for my online corses, managing e-mail messages effectively and counselling students. It has helped me identify different learner profiles that affect online learning, as well as learning the major causes of conflict that affect e-learners and identifying means for reducing student attrition from my online courses. I was also enlightened with the recommending strategies for keeping course records, student communications and counselling, dealing with undesirable student behavior and student conflict resolution.
The most important part I saw with the section was that the instructor has to being active facilitator and not just post the rules but to go back to different points when necessary and to tactfully use the email to individual students to either correct disruptive behavior or to answer questions or to bring people into the discussion.
