Our campus president inspires a culture that is steeped in "intelligent heart" behaviors. She makes sure that the entire campus is student-centered and student success driven. She sets the tone in new student orientation. Whenever she greets you with a smile on her face, you always feel like you are better for your experience with her. She strives to model for the staff that this is the culture and vision that she has for the campus and as faculty, we are empowered to carry forth that vision to the students and throughout the community.

Our schools culture is becoming very centered around our students, and in my opinion getting better every day. I believe the school is full of intelligent hearts. I think an Intelligent Heart is a person that has a clear view of what is needed with mental as well as intellectual intelligence. I think my school is made up of leads that have the very essence of Intelligent Heart and have nothing but the best interest at heart for their faculty, hourly employees, and especially students. Having leaders that have Intelligent Hearts creates a well balanced, strong school community. Which in my opinion results in happy, successful, engaging, well rounded, and very interested students.

Michael,

Thanks. Can you please share one or two specific ways your Admissions and/or Financial Aid depatments demonstrate an intelligent heart?

Jeffrey Schillinger

My schools culture is to involve all departments in the success of the student. From Admissions to Financial aid the purpose is to help the student.

The majority of staff and faculty at our school have "intelligent heart" and are here to help better the students. There are those however that will always complain about any new task they are asked to complete. I try not to focus on there negativity and view them as teenagers and handle them as such. I recall my daughters trying everything to avoid their chores. I would simply say okay. If you are not going to wash the dishes then we will eat on paper plates and have sandwiches for every meal so we don't have pots and pans to wash. Once they realized the didn't like eating sandwiches for every meal althoug they still didn't like doing the dishes they did it because they wanted to eat a good meal. with my coworkers, I simply state what if you were the student and I chose not to help because it is going to take a little extra time. How would it make you feel or fine don't do it and when the students talk amongst themselves and realize how come some instructors are going the extra mile and you are not, it will reflect in your surveys. That usually is enough to give them a bit of motivation. It usually all works out, but it can be disappointing that you have to go to that extreme to motivate someone, who is suppose to be a professional.

A person with an intelligent heart cares about their students, and makes the effort to connect with their students to ensure their success, and also cares about the success of the school and is aware of the attention=retention principle.

I am proud to be a part of organization where each and every student is valued. Our retention rate is very high. It is always emphasized that we need to work together as a team to help our students succeed.

I do think my school is made up of intelligent hearts. I think an "intelligent heart" is one that can sense the best way to handle each situation for the common good of the student and the school. In other words, all that you do and say is in the best interest of the student's success. This includes helping co-workers for the common good, and helping and encouraging student's to achieve their goals and be successful, which in turn aids in student retention.

Our school is very caring towards our students and we do our best to help our students. Success of a person depends on various factors, the person as a whole. Family dynamics, relationships, hardships, conflicts, worries, cultural and many more. By caring and trying to help in any way we can, resolving certain aspects of a students life, bettering it, we can help the student better his/herself towars success

Our employees here at MMTC have intelligent hearts because we all work as a team and care about our students success.

Our school employees are extremely well-trained (intelligent) and we gladly give this training to our students for the purpose of their success (heart). The Intelligent Heart is the perfect term for capturing our school's culture.

someone who care and understands

Jeff,

Thanks for this post. What are some of your school's most effective strategies for turning negative emotions into positive ones?

Jeffrey Schillinger

my school's culture is made up of many intelligent hearts and i see examples all the time. to me an intelligent heart can recognize negative emotions and help students to transform them into a positive emotions without being judgemental. an intelligent heart effectively communicates with students and often uses lighthearted techniques to make a connection.

I truly believe that a large percentage of the people I work with have an intelligent heart. Our president has come a long way to make this happen. I know this sounds cliche, but our school is like a big family. I believe we all like each other, enjoy each other's company, and truly appreciate each other.

The school's culture where I work is being shaped constantly. That means there is give and take in positive and other ways. We just recently downsized because of the economic conditions and expanding regulatory burdens. Naturally, our focus concentrated on successfully navigating those dynamics.

Now is seems we have adjusted and are moving again toward a culture of serving. We are making progress in becoming a force of "Intelligent Hearts" serving professionalism and success to our students. Holding them to high standards, yet providing the means and opportunity for success is permeating our campus culture.

Mr. Schillinger,
I believe the majority of our staff and faculty have the qualities of an intelligent heart. I also agree that one negative person can pull down 11 positive ones. I have witnessed this on our campus. I began to feed into his negativity and adjusted my atittude by limiting the amount of time I spent near this person.
I also, made sure I countered a negative comment with 2 positive ones.

My perception of "Intelligent Hearts" in our school is that we all believe that we have the ability to change the life of one student at a time meaning that we have a caring role that wants to see a student succeed and failure is not an option. Our school staff will work together for the success of the student. Our jobs are not done just because we have graduated a student from our school but believe we take joy knowing what we taught that individual has caused them to succeed in the career they have picked.

We need more intelligent hearts. My perception of the intelligent heart is of someone that cares for the students and the staff. It is more than that but this is where it starts, caring.

Our school has fantastic culture. It is the nature of not only the faculty from due to our previous industry, but also of the students. We all share a common bond, and sense of brotherhood.
