Basically- Treating students the way you would like to be treated. Often times Instructors "forget" that at one time they were in the student's shoes.

john,

This is an interesting post. Can you share an example of when a company wish is not best for the students?

Jeffrey Schillinger

The aducators that I work with feel strongly about thier students and are dedicated to them. The problem with the concept of intelligent heart is that we see sometimes the company wishes are not best for the students. That is my private opinion and I would not express it to students.

Manuel,

If you feel the system is all about the bottom line, you may need to look for a different opportunity to make a difference in students' lives.

Jeffrey Schillinger

I think that there are some individuals that have good intentions but the system is all about the bottom line.

I don't know if everyone has an "intelligent heart".........but many do have common sense which, I find, is almost as important as empathizing with your students situations.

Our instructors have intelligent hearts- we care!

The culture at our campus is one that fosters relationships with our students. They are not just a number to us. An intelligent heart is one who can respect a student and also show compassion towards them. Not feeling sorry for them but showing them that we are supportive of their efforts towards learning and making a new life for themselves and their families.

Fredrik,

Thanks for this post. What are some of the specific things the other departments in your school do to show that they are on the same team as academics?

Jeffrey Schillinger

Our school value is to change the world one life at a time. Helping people to achieve their dreams. We work togeather as a team to help each other and the students.

Howard,

Thank you for this post. What are some specific things you do to get your students to open up to you?

Jeffrey Schillinger

Our school praches to educate the students to be complete employees, not just good technitions. And I percieve that to do so, you must teach them to be complete people. To do so we must be able to put ourselves in their shoes. We must understand about thier problems, e,g,issues, and try to help them resolve them, or at least give them wise guidance, which means we must care about what may be getting in their way of success.

I think our staff is made this way but our students do appreciate it very often

Our culture has been effected by challenging economic influences and a recent reduction in work force. Before all this, there was a greater sense of openness and transparency. And this of course is internal, we are all aware of it and measures are being taken by instructors and managers alike to improve things, but progress is gradual. As far as the students go, yes most definitely, the instructors relate to the students in a culture of "intelligent hearts". Furthermore, I would say that our classroom culture is defined by empowerment, mature caring and accountability.

I practice intelligent heart all the time. It also crosses over to customer service. When students have problems or concerns, I tell them that I will help them even when they don't even take my courses. they all know that I help them.

Our school's culture is made up of a wide variety beliefs, morals, and values. It is important for the Instructor's to be sensitive to all cultures especially when trying to help them meet their long term goals. I think this takes an "Intelligent Heart." I believe an Intelligent Heart encompasses kindness, support, guidance, and education. It is important to be there for your students in every aspect as a mentor. Student's respond to an Instructor who cares about their personal needs and understands when they experience personal difficulties.

The administrators, staff, and instructors cultivate the IH within the school. We work together, we motivate and encourage each other and we assist each other with difficult situations or students. We're new but we're developing a great team. Even after careful screening we'll occassionally hire someone (any department) who doesn't fit. The team works with them but there are times when that employer will leave. I feel (are at least hope) that even then, that individual knows that the team was there for them.

Changing Futures..Changing Lifes...our motto here at our school. We are much about the intelligent heart. If you can impact a student to a level of reaching their heart..then you can change their life! And you can bet you have left a fingerprint in their life.

Thanks, Anne.

I am troubled when career college faculty try to avoid getting to know students. The attention is what leads to student success. Thanks for not being a teacher who tries to keep at a far distance.

I believe our school is made up of positive hearts. That is why I am now going to school here for the second time. The instructors are excited about what they do and are truelly there for the students. They are here to give their all to their students!
