EL 101

Hello

I just finished the EL 101 course and it was quite informative on how to construct online courses. I really liked the links to be able to download templates and learn how to properly balance multimedia, quizzes, lectures, and discussions to achieve the desired learning outcomes. I really appreciate the simple layout of the course and it was very easy to navigate. I highly recommend this course to every online facilitator.

True Grit: Can Perseverance Be Taught?

This is a great TED Talk video in which Angela Lee Duckworth, Ph.D, discusses grit as a quality important to achievement.  She discusses grit as the quality that enables people to "unlock" their talent and questions conventional ideas about intelligence and what leads to achievement.

Is there a way to help students learn how to have "grit?" If so, how?

Learning Disabilites ED106

this course tought me how to work with the person with learning disability,  I have a doughter who is in college and she has learning disability which is effected on her confedence.  this course helped me to use it for her as well.

Motivation

The ED102 was excellent , it provided me with a great insight into student motivation and the factors that influences student motivation. I am a better instructor for this reason

You should never stop learning!

I really enjoyed the Effective Learning Strategies course offered on OACCS.  Just when you thought that you had done it all or applied it all, the right resource comes along and adds something else useful  to your instructional style.  Of the many lessons that were taught, I believe that I will be using the idea of giving the class a simple concise pretest. This  will give me an early idea of how knowledgable the students are in the subject matter that I'm teaching.

ED 103

I thought that this was a really nice overview of what creating and running your own course entails. I thought it nicely covered all the topics from lecturing, to learning, and testing. I think this would be a good course for an instructor just starting out, for more seasoned instructors, this is information they most likely know. Overall, good course!

Improve Student Engagement by Tapping into What Students Know

One of the things that I have encouraged fellow faculty to consider when planning for a class or lab experience is to take into account what the students themselves may bring to the table. It goes without saying that one of the many reasons adult learners come to school, or back to school, is to learn new skills in a particular profession or discipline. Yet they have as well many transferable skills and life experiences to offer which can make the learning environment even more engaging, interesting and relevant.

As faculty plan their teaching strategies and utilize their… >>>

Learning Environment

setting up a pleasent learning environment would definately benefit for students as well as instructor. As we know there are various type of learners in the same classroom setting. Working with an adult learners may require certain classroom management.

Teaching Students the Difference Between Doing the Job and Working the Job

Sometimes when our graduates are challenged with surviving the workplace, it's not because they can’t do the job, but because they can’t work the job. They may have the necessary technical training to perform tasks and assignments, but working the job requires successfully managing all of those human relationships and competing responsibilities that define the workday. As we work with the ongoing development of our professional faculty, we should encourage them to provide opportunities in the classroom or lab, through interactive and critical skills assignments and activities, for their students to practice those workplace survival skills.

I found this course to be extremely interesting and helpful in working with the many different types of students that I have in my classes.

Enjoyed first online course

I thoroughly enjoyed EL103.  I found it interesting on the different techniques used to keep the students engaged.  I found the course very informative.

Excited About the New Quarter

This is my second year as an instructor and I have learned quite a few strategies from ED101 course. I am excited about the upcoming classes I will be teaching and I will definitely be incorporating some of the strategies that I learned. For example, I will start off each class by writing my name and the class on the board. This was something that I did sometimes, but I did not realize how much it settles students' nerves to know that they are in the right class on the first day. Another strategy that I will be incorporating… >>>

Some of us THINK we know it all, so we tend to overlook the importance of soft skills.  We can learn so much about it from this course.

How to Stay Engaged when Teaching the Same Subject Repeatedly

Recently, one of our online course participants, Linda Logan, in her blog, "Understanding Students," stated ..."Also, the instructor must be excited about the course in order to get students excited and motivated.

I had the pleasure of teaching Accounting Principles for years! After a while, it sometimes became challenging to teach the same thing over and over again - how many times can you teach debits and credits a new way? Linda's quote though got me thinking about faculty who teach the same discipline for most of their teaching lives. How do they keep themselves motivated in order to… >>>

Five Top Reasons for Student Attrition

As faculty administrators, deans, program heads, etc. we are no doubt involved in the faculty development of our instructors. It also goes without saying that our instructors are the number one liaison and source of support to our students. In that regard, faculty development accentuates many areas - teaching methodologies and delivery, instructional planning, classroom and lab management, active learning, working with diverse learners too name a few. Additionally though, student retention is a key component of faculty development - how can we help prepare our faculty in addressing retention/attrition issues? The first step may be in acknowledging what some of the top… >>>

ED113 Managing the Adult Classroom

It was mentioned during the course that when students say, "I can't believe it's time already; I had fun learning in this class," the instructor is effective.  I get that a lot, and I am elated that my teaching style is effective.  HOWEVER, I also get negative feedbacks from students who were previosuly under a Buddy instructor. Being a 50/50 Guide-Controller instructor, I am often regarded as 100% Controller by students who are used to the Buddy and/or Apathete type.  I was even called "evil" by a disruptive and immature student for not allowing him to do as he pleased in… >>>

Course 107

This course was really helpful.

ED 110

I'm glad that exercise and talking were encouraged in ED 110 as methods of reducing stress. I wish our company had a corporate wellness program to encourage more exercise on campus.

ED 101

The Harvard Business School lectures were succinct and helpful.  More helpful than the rest of the module in my opinion.
