Instructional information and presentation is very important when trying to rely the information to students.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR CLASS

IT IS COMBINATION OF BOOKS,EXPERIENCE AND ONLINE SOURCES.YOU HAVE TO USE VIDEO CLIPS AND REAL TIME SOURCES SO STUDENTS PAY MORE ATTENTION.

Engaging Students

I feel sometimes I have trouble keeping some of my students engaged during my lectures. I often use power point presentation to help me stay on track and also to give them a visual. I often expand on what is written on the slide but I often have students that try to write down everything that is on the slide and that I say. What can I do to keep my students engaged and help them to understand the purpose of a lecture.

Teaching Journal Structure Tips

Hello, I really like the idea of keeping a journal. It's potential value is obvious. And I truly need to improve the efficiency with which I implement lessons learned from class to class and semester to semester. But just as I am optimistic, I am concerned that without some guidance about how to structure the journal, it will inevitably be just another case of disorganized inefficiency. Do you have any favorite guidelines or tips on how to approach the actual mechanism of keeping a journal? Thanks in advance! Stephen

knowing all involved

Starting my new classes for the term, I often start by introducing myself along with my credentials and experience. I then ask everyone to introduce themselves and tell the class a little bit about themselves because it gives me a better idea of you is in my class. I also ask students to describe themselves using words, actions or verbal cues. By using this activity I can better undertand what learning types I am dealing with.

Grading rubrics

I like to use a grading rubric for assessments. This gives students a foundation to work from. They know how they will be graded and what to expect.

Vocabulary words

I like to have students make mini crossword puzzles and word searches of vocabulary words. Puzzles reinforce word definitions and word searches reinforce spelling. They enjoy the activities and seem to demonstrate better retention.

Various instructional methods

I like to use powerpoints accompanied with a lecture outline with lines for note-taking. After a few slides I might perform a quick check by giving a pop quiz on the main points. This keeps students focused when they know there will be an assessment during instruction.

Advance Preparation

At the end of each class, I like to go over the schedule for the upcoming class session/week with the students. This helps prepare the students ahead of time and clarifies any confusion. It also reinforces the syllabus and lets the students know that we are right on target with meeting the course expectations. It is also a time for me to start thinking about my instructional support needs for class preparation as well.

Powerpoint Presentations

I absolutely agreed. Power points presentations are a great media to delivery instructional content to the class. I use at the daily basis.

Setting a Grading System

This course shows an amazing way for a fair/consistent grading system. It is absolutely helpful, particularly when we have to set up extra-credit activities. Thank you very much for the invaluable input.

Pre-requisite

Most of the time when we see frustrated students in the classrooms that complaint about the course content, I think it is in part due to lack of information or miss-selection by the time they are enroll in school. Admissions play a critical role into delivering the long-term goals of each program. Unfortunately, students get enrolled in programs without filling out the pre-requisites for the programs. That situation could be problematic later on for the students, instructors, and the school administrators as well.

Grading Percentage Weights

What are some of the examples that you as an instructor use to assign grading weights to various subject areas?

Signs its back up time.

How many of us have the ability to keep in touch with our students and notice that they have started to disconnect? What are the obvious and common signs of this? (i.e. reaching for their phones, staring at the clock, sighing, rolling their eyes)

Death by Powerpoint

What are some interactive examples that can be used in the classroom to engage Students while presenting a Powerpoint lecture? Most of the information that I provide is Powerpoint based. I try at all costs to avoid being a Statue Instructor by asking questions from my Students to engage them and to bring them into the fold of learning and participating while providing them with a powerpoint lecture. I would like to know how and what other instructors use to enhance the learning environment while using Powerpoint.

Instructor Teaching Styles

I wonder how many of us educators can honestly see ourselves in one or more of the categories as stated in the beginning of the information provided? I can personally see myself in more than one category. But I realize it is a generalized overview of teaching styles. Which category do you see your self in? How can you change and adapt your style to become a more effective teacher? What can you sustain and maintain about your style that works?

seeing the campus through the eyes of the student

This brings up a good point. I believe that you can develop a bettter relationship with the students if you know where they are coming from. I was a student of the campus where I'm teaching right now. I find this to work to my advantage, because I can relate to my students and they find me approachable.

Time management

Sliding window of time, prioritizing on-the-fly which is more important can help with time management. Constant reading of how the students are reacting to classroom activities or responding to questions during the presentation can confirm if students are understanding the material and went to move on to the next facet of the subject or a new subject.

Lesson plans

Lession plans help to keep the day's lession on track. Having taught my classes for so many years makes the necessity of a lession plan for me not particularly important. But, the plan is NOT just for me. My supervisor, my administration, my students and most importantly - my substitute, when needed - have an absolute need for my day's plan. Including not only what I intend to cover, but why the material is being covered, helps to keep everything relevant, and everybody on track.
