Lesson Plan

I've never written a lesson plan before. I was wondering if I could post one of my lesson plans for discussion and get some feedback on improving it. here it is: Lesson Plan Title: Starting writing with the Narrative Concept / Topic To Teach: Prewriting, the narrative essay, the thesis, topic sentences General Goal(s) Terms: Essay, Thesis, Topic Sentence, Introduction, Body Paragraphs, Conclusion, Prewriting, Narrative, Point of View Specific Objectives: Students will understand the writing process, the essay, and the Narrative essay. Students will complete the lesson by writing their own 2-3 page autobiographical narrative essay. Required Materials: Power point, overhead, handouts (outlines of lectures) Name plates, Netflix, Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Step-By-Step Procedures: This is a multi day lesson, and will cover two weeks (four sessions), ending with students handing in their typed essay. Day 1: When students enter, hand out name plates and ask them to sit in their Planet groups. Power point: intro to writing --define the essay --Things to consider when you write --Understand the assignment --Audience *Group Activity: Write a complaint about a grade you received from your current English professor (me) to one of the following people: The director of education, a priest or religious figure, your parent(s) or spouse, the bartender, someone in a street gang. (students may feel uncomfortable with langue for the gang; they may say cussing is inappropriate for the college classroom. Remind them that this is an activity and not the way we normally hold class; however, it is appropriate to cuss while dealing with a street gang.) --Purpose --Finding a topic --prewriting strategies *Group Activity: using Netflix watch a portion of _Creature Comforts America_ “Art”. Have students in their groups use the prewriting strategies to develop topic ideas based on the short film. (Observe students prewriting process to ensure they are trying the different strategies) *some topics they may develop: the use of famous paintings in the film; the character’s voices matching the animals, the humor, the ideas of what art is agree or disagree. Conclude Day one by handing out the writing assignment and allowing students to ask questions. Homework read: “Into Thin Air,” and “Naming Good Path Elk,” in the text book. Thanks everyone for reading and giving feedback.

I give open book exams regularly

My focus is on project work, not tests, and the percentage for tests is far less than projects. For most students, this helps, but some have problems reading and still do poorly. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Long class times

My design school has 5 hour class times. I use the first 30 minutes to introduce a subject and have discussion about it. Then the rest of class time is for students to work on projects. I find it works best so students can get projects done during class time.

Training Students

Its great to share my experiences with students to help give them ideas about the specific things they will encounter in their desired career choice.

Using colored paper

The different colors of paper can really add to the student experience. It is a change of pace and emphasizes the material

learning or teaching technology

I have found that my adult students seem to be able to help me sometimes with the computer, I let them teach me.

proceedure check off

We have forms that allow us to evaluate each students progress. By doing this I always know when a student is in need of help.

White board

I always write important information on the board along with name date objectives. I find that adding an essential question daily about the prior lesson seems to keep my students refreshed with yestedays material.

get set go

I have been teaching for about 3years and I have been moved around my division and I seek help from my co workers. I also use a test generator that helps me save some time.

Support Material, Notes, and Assessment

I believe that support marterials, notes, and assessments are "the back bones" of any course's content. Without those elements, I believe the class cannot run effectively and so, extra attention should be given to them when they are been developed.

Learning Objectives and Standards

I believe that standards along with objectives are key to help teachers stay on task and give students an idea of what is expected from them.

Overview of Lesson Plans

I beleive that it really important for a teacher to have an overview of the course's content; so he or she can make adjustements as needed.

Preparation for Lesson Planning

I think it's only fair for students that lesson plans are put in place by the teacher; so that the class runs smoothly and student are able to learn in an organized way.

Creating an Evaluation System

When I develop an evaluation sheet for my students. This allows me the opportunity to see if my students understand the content of what I'm teaching. It's a bit of a grading system on my deliverance of the material. My goal is to always make sure my student both understand and comprehend the material. This so that they can use it in their everyday life or work setting. Very good information... carmen p

Troubleshooting Instructional Strategies]

THIS WAS FANTASTIC! YES! I have had many situations where students have are: a little Restless or I didn't plan enough time for the whole Program class and they get bored. Or the Assignment was too difficult. This has given me so much information and material to look into to resolve some of these issues in my class planning. WOW! AWESOME! AGAIN Best Training yet... I really needed this course... Thank you

Selecting Instructional Delivery Methods

Hi: I find that I have to use a variety of different methods in the courses I teach. Because, I have a variety of learners in my classes I don't want to loose anyone. So, I try to encompass PP, Flip Charts, White Board and some movies that are appropriate for the course. I find this captures just about everybody. it has been very successful. I did learn something about PP I utilize the PP that comes with the books. It's helpful but, I find a bit MONDANE... I learned that I can kind of make it my own... and I will :) Thank you very helpful training... very helpful Carmen P

Preparing yourself for the classroom

I look forward to coming up with new and exciting new things to get my students motivated. I usually spend some time researching new ideas to get my students excited! about the course. I make sure my lesson plan, syllabus and copies are all ready before class.
