What do you do when you are assigned a text, but you do not feel as though it is easy to understand? Do you go over before the students start to read it or after?

It is extremely important to understand the learning styles of your students. This a great tool when imposing different learning tools and techniques in class

The Subject is Cheese

In the beginning of module 2, under the heading, "Learning Chains," there is a discussion on the principle of natural cheese versus artificial cheese. Would someone be kind enough to explain to me what the author is trying to say here? And how is this related to questioning and concept-principle learning? I have read and re-read this, and each time the disconnect becomes even greater. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

First Wait Times

I read with interest Jodi Mathews' topic of Second Wait Time, but I am interested in our educational department's inter-rater reliability in dealing with First Wait Times, especially for students who have English as a second language (ESL). I have nothing to report, but I will begin, from this point, to observe and to compare fellow instructors' wait times during our fairly new activity of Oral Exam. My best guess is that we all hurry the ESL student more than we hurry the English as native language person (ENL).

I sometimes move the room around in order to keep the class guessing. The students really stay more alert during class time.

I teach a course where I have to give web based training as part of the curriculum. Sometimes it is very lengthy and my students get bored but because of my curriculum it has to get done in class. What can I do to help them feel more interested in what is going on?

I have found that many times the students hesitate to ask questions because they do not want to sound "stupid". They want the answer, but hope that some else will ask the same or similar question. I tell them that the only "stupid" question is the one that they do not ask. Reply

Active Learning

I teach at a technical school so when I'm going threw my lectures I like to show my students real life examples with my lab task to relate back to my lectures. My question is I still get students that don't seem interested and stay disconnected to the rest of the class. How do I egage those students better so they participate in my class?

Challenged learners

As an instructor, I have developed what I call a 'Toolbox' of delivery methods that include using 'students that get it.' I will get other students involved because at this point, everyone wants to be the hero that got through to the challenged student. It is at this point that I become a traffic controller so that there is order, but this seldom fails.

Delivering course content

I found that this section of the course to be very helpful. With the differing demographic of the student body it is very important that every student "get it".

Negative/Positive Grading Video

Does anyone know anything more about this? I'm not sure I understood about when an instructor would give negative points. Assessing a student's participation as a "Detract from learning" is not clear to me.

Delivery a good plan

I felt that a good lesson plan was the key to success. I would like any new lesson activity that will help me reach students who are mot strong in math.
