open and closed questions

Open and closed discussions during the lectures is a very good opportunity to get the class involved with the subject at hand, and is a tool that can be used to include participation of students that are not involving themselves in the discussion. Very helpful.

Students perspective versus the real situation.

I find that perception is everything to define clear meaning in a classroom situation. I have found that a student can be really off base in what they perceive, but their perception is their truth. This steers many behaviors in the classroom, and the outcome can be seen often as Instructors trying to defend themselves or reacting. I have found asking open ended questions to check if the meaning we originally conveyed was received accurately! For instance, I told students they could use a specialty office in internship for 1/4 of their intern hours. One student thought that meant they could work for a specialist the whole internship? I find with this busy society students minds are racing a mile a minute and they check in & out without us knowing. asking open ended questions teaches more about what they got than what I actually taught.

Group learning

I have found that putting students into groups really helps them in their learning. I believe they feel more immersed/involved in the process when it becomes more "hands on", as it tends to while working in a group setting.

Making the Dull Interesting

From time to time I teach High Power Audio Amplifier Design, not the most exciting subject in world. But the use of interactive diagrams (that can be made with power point using hyperlinks) students can explore the subject easily and have an engaging class.

The Pygmalion Effect

Students need motivation, that goes without saying. But as facilitators we need to make sure that students are ready for the challenge and to "prime" the student with a message like "Today is going to be exciting" That excitement will translate into success.

Simulation is key

I teach recording arts and the best way for students to understand the rhythm and work flow of a studio is to be in one. I usually assign different roles to students and give them a dead line for a certain amount of work, this way students can see and understand the roll that they wil fill once they are done wit school.

Seating.

The "U" to me is the best seating arrangement, students can see each other while asking a question, discussions are very easy to have and maintain because students are not constantly having to look over their shoulders.
