New Instructor

I'm a new instructor with no formal training from a technical institution. All of my training came from OJT and industry based classes. I know the area of study but the technical verbal I'm lacking. Being an instructor now I feel I have to be able to convey the message of study using the proper language. I just want to be a valuable asset to my students.

ED 101

I am starting as a new instructor at a trade school. I just finished the ED 101 course and found a lot of the material very helpful and will put it to use. I am a younger teacher and may have students in my class that are much older than me. I'm worried that they won't take me seriously even though I know the subject matter very well and my knowledge in the industry will help them succeed. Any thoughts would be helpful!

Advice for "one-shot" library instruction sessions

I'm a new academic librarian, and part of my job involves doing instruction sessions on the topics of research, library resources, and APA style. These presentations usually only last about an hour. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to cram a lot of information on sometimes several different subjects into a single presentation and still engage the students so they retain the information?

New Instructor, concerns about age difference.

I am a new instructor and have some concerns regarding how my age will affect me when it comes to teaching the student's. Attendance issues

I teach a 4 hour class block and have trouble with students coming significantly late or leaving significantly early. What is the best way to handle this, especially when giving tests & quizzes? I don't feel it's fair to those who show up on time to drag tests out over the entire 4 hours, but I don't want to give out a bunch of zeroes either.

Adjusting sooner

I usually find the proper lecture format to fit specific student learning styles within the first quarter of the course, but this course will help me to find that connection sooner in the semester. By adjusting to the students sooner, I can relay more information.

First day importance

I have always felt strongly about creating a student-friendly atmosphere immediately on the first day of class. This course has not only reinforced my notion, but has taught me that the first day of class is even more important than I had originally thought. The first day can dictate the tone (for better or worse) for the rest of the semester.

Planning for the unexpected

There is a wide array of student backgrounds and learning styles. Proper planning and preparation allows me to explain course information smoothly and handle many surprises without losing my direction or composure.
