Enjoy what you do

I have been teaching for 19 years, and I still enjoy meeting all the students, teaching them new concepts and techniques. I use all different types of methodologies, and always remember not every student is going to learn at the same pace. They are all individual people.

Taking the time to plan and prepare for class

If you take time to plan and prepare for a class, you don't feel rushed. I usually take a week or more to prepare and plan for a class. This allows me to be more creative and think of new ways to motivate the class. Even if I have taught the class before, I still try to think of new techniques to try.

learning disabilities

students with learning disabilities sometimes need some extra time or extra added explanation of the lesson. I always encourage any of my students to see me for extra help if they need to.

life experience and work related examples in the classroom

in all of my years experience I can think of no better way to learn that by example. hearing stories from instructos in the past and now relating as an instructor myself makes me realize how well this relationship helps on a situation to situation experience

students groups

when putting students into groups this may sound silly but I sometimes have them countoff by two's. there is no bickering about who is on who's team it is strictly random

moving around in the classroom

being comfortable in your classroom will make your students comfortable too

Waiting 5 Seconds

When I first began teaching I found it very difficult to wait the 5 seconds after asking a question. Sometimes it still seems like a lifetime when I am waiting for a student to volunteer to answer a question. Each class is different, but it seems to be getting easier with time.

Students with Disabilities

I had a student who was legally deaf in both ears and could not read lips. It was difficult at first because I had to learn her language in order to communicate with her and provide her with the skills needed and knowledge pertaining to the class. I was doing this at the sametime of training the other students, but we all managed and learned something from eachpother.

other considered

is amazing to see how a student who is reluctant to talk in class blossoms when told they can do the work. Giving them verbal postitive feedback adds to their confidence in themselfs.

learning

it is good to get all kinds of learning types intergrated into your class

classroom

visuals in the classroom: some classrooms simply do not allow use of posters or anything like that on the walls and the room set ups are very limited by the available type and quantinty of tables and chairs but still I am thinking about the idea of visuals. Maybe they can be made by students in some classes as part of the course. They would be temporary but still there and the students would be involved in their production. Anyone with experience here?

the instructor

I’ve tried different techniques with challenging students to get the most out of them

First class

The class I teach is the first class that new students are required to take. Since I am the first instructor the students will meet, I make sure all the students feel comfortable and welcome to the class. During the time of getting to know each other, I have each student introduce themselves. I walk to each students desk and welcome them individually.

Being prepared = Students attention

Making sure that you have all the materials ready to go for class is something students appreciate. Being prepared and ready for class allows you to start class on time, so you don't waste the students time.

First day of class

I set the expectation of the classroom and college rules, and have the students sign a contract stating they understand and will adhere to the rules.

Preparing to Teach

I have found that the sooner I begin to plan for an upcoming class the more relaxed and enthusiastic I am. I look forward to applying new techniques that I have observed from other instructors. One is never too old to learn new methods and then apply them effectively. There is not one day that goes by that I do not learn something new. I particularly like the section on the syllabus. What great and applicable ideas.

Activites in the lecture classroom

I like the idea of games in the classroom, but with limited time it is hard, sometimes we get so involved it is time to go. I need so short to the point games, I will do some research. I know the students will like the change.

Smiling during lectures

I smile all the time during lectures and I have noticed that it really does make my students feel at ease. Each day I come in class I can hear someone say "He's always smiling" It makes me feel good and them as well to know that I truly enjoy my job. Who agrees with me? :)

examples

When I am teaching a difficult concept to my classes, I often find that many students cannot focus on the material for a variety of reasons. To fully engage the students in the subject matter to assess the their understanding. If they do not understand I then try a different method to help the students grasp the material. I tell my students that they need to ask as many times as necessary for them to understand the material.

[Developing as an Instructor]

One of the hardest thing for a new instructor is to follow the 3 M's. Some instructors find it very hard not t0 be friends with the students. They want the students to like them so sometimes the language and conduct of the students is ignored because they don't want to labeled as the mean instructor which causes loss of control of the classroom.
