It is imporant, so they have their own assessment of their progress at any point during the class.

Once I have updated the students grades, I ask the student if they felt they did their best. They then begin to think about what it is they need to do to improve or they ask me what they can do to improve.

This is an area I know that I need improvement in. I am one who trys to keep students up to date on their grading, but I fall short in this area due to time management. It is my goal to do to better in the next semester to come. It is very important to keep the student up to date on their grades.

Keeping the students informed helps them in many ways. It lets them know how they are doing but it will also can help them know what they may need to review before the next test or final exam. It also releaves the stress of not knowing how they are doing so that they can focus on the new material.

So students know where they stand in the course. Also, it also acts as a reminder if they are missing assignments.

It is important to let students know where they stand in a course frequently for several reasons: students often do not know how to figure out their true statuses, students need to know what they can do to improve a score they are not happy with and maintain one they are happy with, and they will know that you really care about their progress. Confidentiality must be maintain in doing so though.

Hi Jennifer:
Correction often takes time to make a difference in the students grade. Waiting too long, or not providing enough advice and supportive suggestions leaves open the possibility of too little too late.

It is important to keep students updated because they like to know how they are doing in the course. Do they need to put in more effort, study a little bit more, or are they doing just fine, it puts them a ease to know what their status is.

Hi Earnest:
I believe frequent and early-on progress information is key to students understanding where they are performing, how they can improve, receiving on-course correction through suggestions, advice, along with encouragement and support provided with a kind, caring manner that suggests the teacher cares about the students success. There has to time for correction by the student for it to have an impact on their grade, so thorough (frequent and early-on) can make a difference in performance, understanding, and successful application.

Regards, Barry

Hi Katheryn:
I understand you point. I might focus that just a bit by saying that students need to know if they are falling short of our goals for them our classes. Frequent and eraly-on sharing of progress allows for correction so it can be reflected in their grades. Kind and caring words of support also go a long ways to making the student feel good about their studies.

Hi Patrick:
I've found few who don't care (maybe the top student who knows they've mastered the material). I believe frequent and "early on" sharing course status helps in order to allow for the student to make corrections, and to see it reflected in their grade. If the points and grade information provide the technical aspect, we can aslo add the human aspect by encouargement, support, suggestions and assistance. These suggest to the student the teacher cares about the student and their successful learning the needed material.

Hi Charles:
Great. Encouragement and support are just as important as facts, points nad grades.

Student who care want to know how they are doing. It is fair to give a status of their progress. This also help you talk with student if their are any challenges.

Besides keeping students informed it, can also act as a motivational tool. Positive for those achieving success, and the realization of the need to improve performance for individuals not meeting course standards.

A student needs to be aware if they are falling short of their goals.

students need feedback from instructors on their performance so they know if their effort is succeeding or not.

Students grades should be posted in engrade in a timely manner.

to relieve anxiety about a class, i've found it helpful to give students a "to-date" score when 2/3s of the class is done. most students only calculate their grades from exam scores only and leave out points from homework, participation etc they "lowball" themselves and often give up.
it also allows the student to see the "points remaining to be scored" and in which categories. this seems to allow them to focus on what they need to accomplish.

Hi Mark:
Frequent and early discussion is important to me. Frequent, so students can make my suggestions for improvement. Early on and frequent, because there needs to be time for correction. We want the students to feel we care and see their progress, so let's give enough time to progress.

Regards, Barry

It is a students fundamental right to know their status in a course. Delays in providing this information in its current context and in a timely manner may be viewd at best as disorganized and dimissive, at worst, as secretive and hostile. Students thrive on a sense of accomplishment. The more immediate the feedback the more motivational that accomplishment becomes. Students need an accurate picture of the landscpe so that they can adjust and move forward. No one likes or wants negative suprises.
