It helps student understand how well they are understanding the material covered. It also helps then know how they stand in the class.
This allows them to know exactly what is happening each day fo the course. They can also use this to set small goals for themselves, so that they can see they are accomplishing many things by being in school and staying focused.
Hi Diane:
Good points. The chance to offer our support and encouragement, with care and thoughtful words of suggestion and advice can also accompany grades and points discussions.

Hi Tula:
Giving encouragement when sharing grades shows the teacher cares about the student.

Hi Kevin:
Chatting, even informally creates relationships, that opnens doors to students being open to the teacher.

Each institution has to decide what works best. Should be fair and measurable.

Students need to know where they stand in the class. In that way, they have the opportunity to ask for extra help, if they are not doing well. By keeping your grades up to date and providing your students with real-time secure access to their grades, there are no surprises at the end of the term when they receive their final grade. If they wish to protest a less-than-favorable grade, the time to do so is during the term when there is opportunity for them to improve (by applying themselves or arranging for tutoring) or perhaps to take on extra credit assignments to improve their grades.
Keeping students informed of their status is mainly important because it removes the anxiety surrounding the course. It has been my experience that students harbor a lot of insecurity about course content.

Keeping students informed of there status in the class helps to resolve any issues before the end of class and to let them know exactly where their are and areas where they need improvemnet.
This will them that you care about them and that you want them to succeed in the course.
It is important for a student to be informed as to their status in a course because they need to know what they are comprehending and what they still need to work on. I also feel that if they see that they are not doing very well in the class then there will be no surprises when the grades come out and therefore there will be less of a chance that they will try and challenge the grade or try to blame their grade on the instructor. However, I also believe that it can have the opposite effect in that it can work as an incentitive for them to do better because if they know that they are on the edge of getting a "B" or a "C" then they tend to work just a little bit harder to get to that next grade or level.
it helps to keep them motivated
So that you and the student know were their status is in case you need to work on any areas
Students need to be aware of their grades at all times. This gives them time to study difficult areas. A Student being aware of their grades gives them a sense of accomplishment when they are doing well and sense of urgency when they aren't doing so well.
I believe that their are numerous reasons for good communication between the instructor and students.
It helps them stay engaged in the class.
It helps with rention of that student in the class.
The student will be less likley to fall behind as they are current on their grade.
so they know where they stand!
To keep the up to date on their progress in the course. If they are seeing what their grade is on a weekly basis, they are more likely to want to "pull up" a grade that is on a downward slope. Also, no one likes surprises at the end of a course. It will save much anguish on both sides if grades are kept up to date.
So they know what their grade is. If they are slipping, they can buckle down and climb back up before it's too late. It also lets them know what they are missing and why their grade is either high or low. All students like to know what their grades are. It also allows them to see how each grade they earn, or don't earn alters their overall grade.
Hi David:
I think the positive, supportive aspect of interacting with students when sharing grades can make a difference in the student's attitude towards their learning. Knowing the grade information is one thing, but wanting to make an effort to improve and respond to the advice given.

It informs the student on how they are doing in the course and what they need to concentrate on more. It also informs them on what they are doing well for some positive feedback.
