Hi Kathleen:
Good points. I agree that being unprepared can waste the students time, and because of that, reflect on the students perception of the teachers competence and abilities. Preparedness does set the tone for the teacher's expectations.

Hi Caroline:
When students walk into a a clean, organized and inviting classroom it helps set the tone for how the classroom experience is going to be and creates an anticipation by the students of a throrough learning experience is about to begin.

An intructor should be prepared and organized for each class to present professionalism, not waste the students' time, model the behavior that you want the students to exhibit when they come to class and reduces stress for everyone. If an instructor is not prepared it shows and the instructor knows they aren't prepared. Their stress level increases and this can increase the stress level of students. Kathleen

For me it keeps me calm and ready for questions or if more material is needed I am ready.

Hi Jan:
Good! I have found that as time goes on I always have more information then there is time to present. So I've had to learn to be selective while making sure I cover the essential course objectives.

Hi Klaus:
Very good popint. Integrating the big picture regarding the students education should help them fit the different pieces together.

I am extremely sensitive to preparing in advance and generally have more material avaliable that time allows. I also believe strongly in allowing students to move the class in different directions within the constraints of the material.

This is important to me and I go a step further by talking about the other classes the students take at the same time because they are related to my class.

Hi Joseph:
Your focus on goals and student successfulness are right on. Thanks for sharing.

It shows that you are serious about class and also allows the class to run smoothly. It also shows the students the detail of attention needed for perfection if they want to reach their goals.

Hi Kym:
Yes, our place is do our best to educate our "trustees" while they're in our charge. This can hard and soft skills (hard is the core professional topics; soft are the professional things such as language, appearance, attendance, courtesy and respect). I believe as role models and expierenced individuals in our trade we are equipped to teach both.

Regards, Barry

I agree totally. If students see and hear now about what is expected in the work place, they will not be unpleasantly surprised when they get out there. We have this divine opportunity to model the type of preparation and behavior that will help them to succeed at their new career.

Hi Carlos:
I agree and think that students do look to their instructor as role models. So, beside academic lessons, we also have an opportunity to create good citizenship, courtesy, and respect.

Regards, Barry

I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT BEING ORGANIZED AND PREPARED FOR EACH CLASS IS ESSENTIAL IN TEACHING YOUR STUDENTS ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS AS WELL AS GAINING THEIR TRUST AND RESPECT, THEREBY, SEEING YOU AS A ROLE MODEL.

Hi Amber:
Good! Mood, atmosphere, whatever we call it translates to expectations. If we want students to follow our model and excel in the classroom and their profession, peparing an environment that suggests "you can be succssful and I'm here to help you do it" can really tun the trick!

Hi Novella:
Good point. When students feel theur teacher care about their learning, I believe they are more likely and willing to do a better job and follow directions.

Regards, Barry

It sets the mood for the class- knowing you are serious and are prepared to give your students 100%.

It makes the students feel that you are concerned enough about them learning the information that you have taken the time to properly prepare to deliver it professionally and effectively.
It will also build their confidence in your teaching ability.

Hi Carriann:
Good idea. There are many ways to set the example. I think the point of this question post attempts to underscore the importance of instructor preparation leads to improved student outcomes. As you say, we do want the graduate to be prepared for the workforce.

Regards, Barry

Hi Carriann:
True - most students in vocational education entered school to learn a trade. So our focus should always be reinforcing that big picture why they're there and their puropse in being successful. As instructors we are uniquely equiped to do just that.

Regards, Barry
