I am a very energetic person and I love teaching. I am very infatic when I teach and I want to engage my students. I encourage them to speak up and ask appropriate questions and to be engaged in class and discussions.

Confidence is a big thing. IF the instructor is confident then class can be fun.. The mode of delivery is different for each part of the class such as lecture and hands on traing.

Hi Warren:
Doing this can also serve another purpose - by being in a closer proximity to the student, you help prevent the student getting off task and keep them engaged for a longer time.

Hi Brenna:
Interaction is great! One thing for instructors to keep in mind is the idea of balance - too much humor, for example, may serve to distract the student from the learning. This might be suggested about any extreme of personality.

I can get very passionate about many of the subjects I teach and I find that my passion directly influences the level of engagement of each student. Yes, there are those who never seem to engage fully, but the students with borderline attitute issues get excited when I'm excited.

Hi Jim:
These are great points. One thing to keep in mind is BALANCE when it comes to instructor personality. Any extreme, be it too much humor, or too much strictness can serve to distract the student from the learning.

Hi Ha Nie:
One thing to keep in mind is the idea of TOO MUCH personality. In other words, any extreme, be it too much humor, or too much seriousness may serve to distract the student from the content.

I think every instructors personality plays a huge role in any class they are teaching. I am a glass is always half full teacher. When I first came into this field over 13 years ago, I knew that I wanted to be the instructor that students showed up early for class and always stayed late because they craved more and made it fun. Personality plays a big role in this. I also own and operate two businesses and I bring my success and failures into the class when I present these. I always keep it up saying even with all the degrees I have, I still make mistakes…but I have learned to laugh at them, learn from them, and move on.

I must say that I definitely feel that my personality is coming out more and more in my teaching as I have gained more experience. When I first began teaching, I tried to include some jokes and let other parts of my personality shine through, but I was so focused on not making mistakes and remaining relevant to the material that I felt stiff. As the months have gone by I have become much more comfortable in my own skin at the front of the classroom and with this I have noticed that my students are even more receptive to me.

Hi Janine:
Very true - keep in mind however, that too much personality (too humorous...too strict) may only serve to distract the student.

Hi Terry:
To play the "devil's advocate" for a second, too much of any kind of personality style, be it humorous, or strict may serve to distract the student.

Regards, Barry

I am very personality driven and my selection of delivery mehtods are directly reflected in the classroom. My classrooms are very interactive, jovial, hands-on, real world, and practical. This allows me to be transparent and real.

Hi DaNae:
True! However, too much of any extreme may distract the student from the learning. For example, too much humor, or too much of a serious demeanor.

Hi Sherry:
One thing to mention about this is the concept of BALANCE. Too much of any extreme in personality, whether too humorous, or too serious (for example) might only serve to distract the students.

Regards, Barry

selecting delivery methods that go along with our personalities can enhance the learning process because the instructor will feel more comfortable teaching and the learning environment improves.

Hi Sandy:
What you are describing here is the need for BALANCE between all delivery methods. Too much personality one way or the other can serve to distract the student.

Regards, Barry

My personality is that of a caretaker. Therefore I try each class to discuss the information in a different way--using PP one week, lots of hands on examples the next. This way I feel I am addressing each of the different types of learners in my class.

Hi Nancy:
This is true. Something else to consider is the idea of BALANCE. An instructor that is too passionate about a topic can be just as distracting as an instructor who is underwhelmed about a topic.

Regards, Barry

Students that are having fun and enjoying what they are doing are learing, SO TRUE I put my personality out there for the student to see i seek out who is still shy or even worse loud. one by one I'll talk to them and ask what there wants are in this feild explainging my mistakes and goals how I got them

Hi William:
True - but keep in mind that any extreme in personality type might be distracting to the student. If we are TOO passionate, or not passionate enough, both of these styles can translate something tothe student that may not be what the instructor wants.
