Lifelong learning is the goal of education. Preparing students to continue to reach their life goals must be an on going process.

Hi Howard:
This is a great description of the goal. If we were to broaden in a bit, we might also describe it as "the impartation of knowledge".

Hi Philip:
This is a great point about helping students not make mistakes. Have you ever noticed that even when trying to do this, it still happens?

If we were to make a broad statement, we might say that in general, the goal of educating is to impart knowledge to the student.

Regards, Barry

Hi Sue:
Excellent! A broad description might also be "to impart knowledge", however, there are many ways of describing the concept of goals and their outcomes.

Hi Barry,

While I do agree with you about a solid curriculum, experienced, motivated and enthusiastic instructors, I think it's important to note that only those students who are motivated and enthusiastic are bound to be successful. It's unfortunate, but we get a lot of students who are right out of high school or unsure of what they want to do, or who have a mistaken idea of what they'll be able or qualified to do when they finish. A lot of theses students can become motivated and excited about their field as they go along, but there are always a few who will not be successful, for various reasons. This is the biggest challenge we face as instructors, how to maintain our enthusiasm when we look out and see students who don't seem to care, or who we know don't "have it".

The goal of educating students is to prepare them for the world of work. I teach in a career school and it's vital that we prepare students to their career.

passing on knowledge

In our institution, the goal of educating the students is to make them more effective in their support of their supervisors' objectives; a supporting goal would be to enable them to pass that knowledge down to their subordinates to make them more effective, as well.

Hi Deborah:
This is a great description. A broader consideration might be "to impart knowledge to the student".

Hi Brandy:
Good point - in addition, we might also say "to impart knowledge", however, what you've said is especially true for career oriented courses.

Regards, Barry

Dear Barry,
The goal of educating students is to help them develop critical thinking skills and other skills so they integrate it into both their personal and professional lives.

The goal of educating students is to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for them to gain employment. We are guided through the journey by course objectives, but the day-to-day environment is the key to education. What we do as instructors, in terms of presentation and demonstration, is key to education.

The goal of education in general is to familiarize students with a new skill or subject. They should feel comfortable at the end of a class, to take this new information out into the real world, and apply what they have learned. Part of the education process is to teach students how to learn/study through suggestions about study skills.

For me, it is to get them exactly where they NEED to be which will allow them great success!!

For me the goal is take the student to the next level and to have them be more prepared to use technology in their field of study.

I think the goal of educating students is to help them obtain the knowledge and skills that they need to be successful in their chosen career field. As instructors we have the opportunity to "touch the future" through our students. That is an exciting and wonderful responsibility and opportunity!

The goal of education is to give students functional knowledge that they can use in their careers and in their lives. They need to be able to manipulate the information that they learn and to apply it in a variety of settings.

Joseph,
that is one of the things that I somewaht expressed in my last post. Students teach other students, and this also help us as educators. Some times students have ideas that we have not thought of that can convey a message to other students more clearly than we as educators can at times.

Ronald,
I have been teaching in higher education for almost nineteen years, and nothing makes me prouder than to see students have an aha moment. They get it!!!

I also like to see when students come up with original ideas in class that I have not thought of. I learn from my students as musch as they learn from me. Being a part of shaping the next generation is very important to me, because they are our future.

The goal of educating students for me is to give them a solid knowledge base that they can apply to real world settings and/or build upon.
