Hi Chris:
Exactly - and one way of achieving this is to continually make changes and improvements in our teaching styles to be as effective as we can be.

Hi Joshua:
This is so true - goals are really an individual thing that can best be determined by a discussion in the example you describe.
I guess if we were to genearlize this concept, we might say the goal is to "impart knowledge" to the student in the most effective way possible.

My personal for my students is to give them a sense of what the "real world" is like, meaning there at stake than just passing the course. I frequently will take time to "coach" students on their attitude, demeanor, or behvior in class to prepare them for a potential boss. My favorite phrase is "you could graduate with all A's and get fired your first day on the job!

To me the goal of educating students is to bring forward the next generation of skilled worker to replace me. I don't want them to have to redo all the mistakes I made to this point in my career. I want them to be able to take what I have learned and go beyond. What I have acquired is but a stepping stone to the future and I can forsee greater things in the evolution of technology within my field.

In my mind, the goal of educating students is providing them all the tools necessary for them to succeed in their field of study. You are given the awesome responsibility of equipping the future leaders with technical skills along with all the soft skills to enable them to succeed. It will be up to the learner to assimilate the information you are teaching them, and your instructional delivery methods will help to make their learning a success!

I teach at a career college so I think the goal of educating my students is to be able to know that when the walk in on the first day of their job they have the basic foundation of what to do. They are prepared for it and can handle the things that are thrown at them.

To have a positive impact on their life, and help prepare them for their future.

Beyond just preparing the next generation for the jobs of tomorrow, I think it's also valuable in showing students what they are actually capable of.

To prepare them for careers in their field.

The goal of educating students is to have them take what they have learned (both "soft" and "hard" skills)and apply those skills for the service of the good of others and society as a whole.

My goal of educating students is to get them ready to go out into the work world and do a good job. I want them to have the skills necessary to make themselves successful in their employment.

My goal in educating my students is to inspire them to do great things with what they have learned. To take the skills they have acquired in class and apply it to the real world. My goal is for them to become the best health care providers out there.

To train them for their jobs

Hi Barbara:
That's a great way to think of this! Another idea might be "to impart knowledge to the student".

Hi Jerry:
Clever use of simple instructional tools. I am always impressed and sometimes amazed at what I hear instructors do to make their classes more inetresting. This one has a small bit of cost but the benefits are worth the peenies it costs to obtain the post-it's.

Regards, Barry

I agree and think 'post-it' flip charts are really valuable. One can write something on the white board and place a post it chart over the message with certain questions....pull the post it off and you have information related to the questions to help students think differently.

The goal of educating every student is to have them learn other outcomes to what your teaching and to ensure they have master the content in which you are teaching. You can do this as discussed in various methods--flipcharts and most powerful is presentations using PowerPoint. So when you utilize these teaching methods you are able to teach students that learn from visual, hearing, and other cognitive methods.

To me the goal of educating students is to give them a foundation on which to build-adding experiences as they travel through their chosen career path

Yes, indeed. ETHICS,ETHICS, ETHICS

It is important that the students not only learn the subject material acedamically but also practically with a lot of hands on instruction. Also more important is building the students character , their professionalism and work ethics at the same time. So depending on the students needs the instructor might have to adjust teaching styles to accomplish a broader overall goal.
