The goal of educating students is to pique their interest so that they want to learn more specific information on the subject. In my classrooms, my challenge is to help students think in a different way. To understand something differently than they had before. Opening their eyes to new/different ways of looking at things.

Fellow educators,
As I was reading through some of the posts here I thought, "There are diverse educators here with a fairly common thread." The goal overall seems to be to prepare students to take a meaningful place in life.
I try to teach my students to be critical thinkers. In a lot of jobs the main requirement is to follow directions but even then if a person can evaluate what is happening they may be able to find a way to improve on it. A mobile home that I used to live near by recently burned down. I asked the landlord what happened. The story was unbelievable. The tenant had a fireplace and put the ashes in a plastic bucket. Before he took it outside he was called away to an emergency at the hospital. When he came back home there was a small fire burning inside the mobile. He tried to put it out but it started to get out of hand. So what did he do? He called the landlord and said, "My house is on fire. What should I do?" Of course, he told him to hang up and call 911 but by the time the fire truck arrived it was too late. This one missed the critical thinking and apparently the instructions as well.
Another thing I stress is to do more than the minimum. Do your best whether you like what you're doing or not. If you want to get ahead you have to work as if you are earning the wage you want rather than the wage you are.

The goal of educating students is to ensure that we are creating a society of young men and women who will be able to take on leadership roles in the future. Our students are our future. If we want a productive society, then we must produce a society of individuals who are knowledgeable, innovative, and intelligent.

Hi Ginger:
You've got a good grasp (in my opinion) of what our goals are and outcomes are for students. Without a broad based goal, we could end up doing a lot of busy work and end up missing the whole purpose for students.

The goal of educating students is to pass on a relevant knowledge base, (hopefully) foster an interest in the course material, and give the students what they need to build on for a successful beginning to their future.

Hi Mark:
Lots of excellent examples. When we convey all we have as teachers, good students will take that preparation, and take further. That's the difference in just teaching vs students learning. So, if our goal is to teach, that's just a job and there may not be any positive outcome. But as educators, that suggests we have taught and students have learned. And because of that, they use their knowldge in ways that help make our world a beeter place to live.

Regards, Barry

Hi Timothy:
Very succinct, and I agree. I think you've provided an accurate definition.

Regards, Barry

Hi Susan:
Yes, unless we give all we have, we will be limiting the next generation. I agree our goal is to do all we can to convey our knowledge and experiences in order to assist the students in becoming and doing better than we did.

Regards, Barry

The goal of educating students is to bring to them an understanding and a knowledge of a given subject.

For me the goal of educating students is to provide the next generation of professional caregivers. To make sure they have the skills and insight to provide the best care possible. And to also pass on a passion for my profession.

The overall success of the students,

ability to think effectively with clarity and power, to problem-solve, to collaborate and communicate clearly with effect in their chosen fields. To participate in civic affairs (field trips being one interaction ), and is also dependent on the possession of an ethical work core that should be developed / shown in class, then schools must continue their work in new ways to reach and prepare students for their ever evolving times and careers. Times and students have changed so must we.
These are many reasons why being a student based instructor works so well.

Hi Alan:
You've stated that nicely. Can't really add to it. Of course, the challenge is to try to achieve that with each and every student.

Regards, Barry

Hi Donna:
I call waht you describe as "the teacher's reward", that is, to see the transformation from novice to expert. Of course, there are degree among these definitions, but our participation in contributing to the advancement of the student's knowledge is priceless.

Regards, Barry

Hi Loren:
My shorthand definition: Trnasfer of knowledge from teacher to student to achieve a purpose. That pupose may be academic, vocational, supplementary, or remedial. But our basi job is to convey what we know to our students.

Regards, Barry

Hi Jennifer:
Yes! We can be that "force" to rightly motivate and encourage, and in fact, create an environment for learning that students will grow to expect good outcomes because of the efforts we give in our classes.

Regards, Barry

So true, since it will turn out to be just exactly what they put in to it. Usually people are motivated by what they want (their goals) consciously or not. Sometimes we can help them change their goals in a positive way. This is one of the reasons I love to teach.

For me the goal of educating students is to enrich their minds with the spectrum of material that needs to be obtained from that particular class as well as providing them with the skill set that is needed to proform tasks. In doing so I am encouraging their confidence in themselves and a comfort level that they feel compitant and able. Atb the end of my class I hope they feel filled up with knowledge and ready to takle the next set of learning!

the goal of educating students is to watch them evolve from someone with no or little knowledge of the course content to being on their way to a successful career. As with the PCT students to watch them in the clinical area and see how they have progressed is amazing.

I agree with trying to get students to Not make the same mistakes we once made, However I also believe that some of the best learning experiences come from those mistakes, Students tend to be so afraid of failing, that they never truly allow themselves to grow, and therefore learning can come at a much later time. Mistakes allow for students to realize the skills needed in that moment, I think its reassuring to some.

The end goal of educating students is to enable them to independently apply the skills and knowledge that they have obtained through various learning experiences to situational problem solving scenarios.
