It is my goal to get students prepared for the real world

Hi Carol:
Good responses. I like your comment about the students personal goals which are important too.

For me, a goal is something to achieve. The goal of educating students then, is to achieve the transfer of knowledge from teacher to student. We can do that because of our work experience and education. When the focus of a particular educational program is work related, then competency in all the required skills would become part of the goal.

Hi John:
I'm a big believer in expectations, especially among the adult learners most of us are involved with. I believe that if complete instructions and clear guidleines are provided, most responsible adults will try their best to comply. Of course, as students, there will always be varying degrees of diligence and competence regarding grades and performance. But with knowledge of what is expected, the goals of the class can be achieved with a higher rate of success.

I think there are several goals of educating students. First is to help them achieve whatever goals they have set for themselves. Second is to provide well educated people to go out into the world to work. Third is to increase the students self confidence, for as they learn new things I think they become more able and will to continue trying new things.

In my case it is my goal to make sure that all the students are aware of what they are expected to receive from the class, the learning objectives on day one. And then to use all my tools and experience to create a day by day journey that will slowly include all learning objectives. I find you must build slowly but continuously through the semester with ample time to review older bullet points and relate them to newer bullet points. If the learning is sequential the student has an easier time retaining the information.

Hi Stephen:
You've summarized some good and true thoughts. This question really gets at the heart of why we teach, doesn't it? There are a lot of right and correct ways of addressing the question. For me, the essesence of it "to transfer knowledge from teacher to student" which is kind of clinical. But the ways and methods we use are what makes it dynamic.

There are several goals,
motivating the students to learn,
helping them to develop soft skills to keep
their jobs in the future, and
making sure they understand the material
presented so they learn it and can
apply it to real life situations, not
just memorize it.

Hi Eric:
I like these comments. My spin is "the transfer of knowledge from teacher to student". How, when, and where are secondary (but necessary) considerations.

Keep student motivate focus learning outcome, remove learning barriers and provide individuel instruction

Hi Ted:
I like to state it this way: The tansfer of Knowledge from teacher to student. There are many layers underneath this basic principle, but I don't think it could be more succinctly stated.

Hi Eva:
As teachers, we are the most qualified to lead the students in the path that will assist them in gaining that knowledge they will need for successful careers, or prepare them with necessary skills.

Hi Trinidad:
Great summary I think touches the essence of the goal and purpose.

Regards, Barry

The goal for educating students is to impart an understanding of the information in such a way that the student can use that information and apply it to different real world applications.

Having the student be compitant and confident in their given field of stude.

The goal of ecucating students, and I must point out that I only teach adults, is to help them apply knowledge they have to new situations as well as develop new skills that will apply in their chosen career.

Hi Laura:
Yes, employment is a hoped-for outcome. To me, a good way to think about learning "goals" is how can we be effective in transfering knowledge to our students. If we do that correctly, their education will further their pursuit of successful careers.

Regards, Barry

To prepare them for successful employment.

Hi Maimoona:
You've provided a good perspective on goal and purpose. I agree application is at the core of teaching students.

Regards, Barry

The Goal of educating students is to equip them with soft and hard skills..they should know the reason behind why the learn a particular skill and how to apply it effectively.
also instructors should motivate students in a such a way that they "want" to keep on learning throughout their lives.

Hi Jason:
I agree with you in that we we all learned from others so it it our job to give all we can to have the next generation take what we've given and go farther and/or do more with it. In that sense, yes, it is a stewardship.
