This is the one and only target to shoot for. As a career college our main goal is to shape the students into what the employers expect.
Richard,
True, when these activities are accomplished, the student becomes better ready for employment and work readiness.
Barry Westling
The goal is to get the student to research, analyze and develop new learning on their own. Tools like repetition, peer to peer learning, class activities and self assessment can all be used to engage a student to higher learning.
Monica,
From the standpoint of an employer, I also believe being job ready is a major goal students leaving us should possess.
Barry Westling
The goal of educating students should be to instill wisdom, knowledge and understanding so that an individual can not only make a difference for the present but for the future as well.
Thomas,
From an employer standpoint, being capable workers with the requisite knowledge and skills is desirable, along with having critical thinking abilities along with soft skills that make getting along in the workplace successful. Making a significant contribution is certainly an admirable personal goal that individuals can obtain if they have a prepared mind and are rightly motivated.
Barry Westling
My goal is to help them to realize how valuable they can be in changing their own worlds, as well as changing the world we live in.
Sean,
Right. If we are training workers, I believe they need to leave us with knowledge, skills, applications, soft skills, and critical thing abilities. With these they should be ready to approach just about any work or personal life situation.
Barry Westling
No matter what you are teaching the students, the goal should always to for them to learn. That's it really. We hope that they will leave our class or program and be effective members of our industries. This cannot happen though if they do not truly learn what we are trying to teach them. I know so many instructors that will give up too easily on a student who struggles and the rationalization is that they may not use that too much in the field, or at least they got enough to pass the test. But the student hasn't learned what it was your job to teach them.
Joshua,
Good. It's true, the "get-it" quotient has to be there for students to truely understand, apply, and use the information taught in most courses.
Barry Westling
Beverly,
Great. Confidence, along with knowledge and skills, and perhaps an ability to be critical thinkers will help them both in work and in their personal lives.
Barry Westling
The goal of educating students is not just information craming but information embracing. Absorbtion and demonstration are more important. Do they get the between the lines? Do they get the why? I feel it is the goal of the instructor to inject knowledge with passion, demonstration, implementation, and assimilation for it to become complete.
I see my students come into the classroom, very apprehensive and nervous. When my students leave my classroom with the confidence to go out into the real world, I have attained my goal.
Kari,
Yes, and hopefully, we can make them be happy and satisfied with their career by being safe, knowledgeable and thinking workers.
Barry Westling
David,
Right. A good way to look at it is through the lens of an employer. They expect their worker to have the skills, knowledge and thinking ability to be effective on the job. Preparing students for this purpose is a good target to shoot for.
Barry Westling
Providing your students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in their chosen career.
The Goal of Educating Students is to ensure that they can produce results in their chosen field of study. These results should be positive and reproducible. The students should be able to apply the knowledge they have learned to any situation that arises in thier career and in thier life. The student should eb confident in thier abilities to master the situations.
Shayan,
From an employer standpoint, a graduate who is well versed in socio-civic-community activities but can't perform basic job duries safely is not employable. Probably there is a balance. Most accredited schools (associate and bachelor degree level) require a commensurate liberal arts component to their vocational training component for graduation, adhering to your notion that a well rounded individual will be a better employee.
Barry Westling
Hello Jeannette,
I share your goal in that I want to ensure students do obtain and possess the knowledge and skill sets required for them to be successfull in their careers; but i also want them to develop their own capacity for personal achievement and contributing to society as an active citizen.
Many educators believe that the chief purpose of educating students is to create future workforce with the required skills to fill and perform available jobs. Others believe this outcome is too narrow and that the education process should pursue development of active citizens, helping students develop their own capacity for personal achievement and contributing to society as an active citizen for consensus.
