Doris,
For me, job readiness and critical thinking help my students and graduates be successful, and that's what I strive for.
Barry Westling
The goal of educating a student is to give them avenues of success and educating them on how to utilize the skills taught.
David,
Sounds like a great target to shoot for. For me, I believe attaining my goals for my students is an every day requirement, otherwise I fall short on my personal expectations, and student learning may suffer as the result as well.
Barry Westling
my goal is to reach every student. i dont want to leave any one behind. i want every student to understand the material before i move on
Meagan,
Great. And I think part of that professionalism and growth includes getting students tro be critical thinkers. In this way, we can help them not just in their employment but in their lives and personal interests
Barry Westling
To see them grow and to prepare them to be professionals in their chosen field.
Amy,
It's said "education is something no one can ever take away from you". Therefore, what we give to our students can help them both in school, at work, and in their personal lives, possibly even a better future.
Barry Westling
To provide students the tools needed to be prepared when opportunity knocks. As well as the freedom to make choices in their life.
Rachael,
Sounds good. You bring up an important point, that of the importance of confidence by the student in their knowledge of course materials. I think most students display some degree of uncertainly about what they know when entering the job market. Instilling confidence does help the mind and perspective of the student seeking work and applying the knowledge they've been given.
Barry Westling
The goal for educating students is to deliver tools they may utilize to perfect a new trade and/or skill. The education gained improves self esteem and confidence that may also help in their soft skills.
Amir,
True, and if we can also convey critical thinking skills, we'll be able to help them both at work and in their personal lives.
Barry Westling
the goal is to teach them new skills to be able to perform thier jobs better.
Richard,
Right! If we can achieve these grad goals, we will have done our students a great service.
Barry Westling
The gosl should be to provide them with the skills, knowledge, and ability for them to be succesful in life, their field of study and in the workforce.
Bruce,
Critical thinking practice is key to producing graduates who will be morew capable employees once they graduate. Having a base knowledge coupled with the ability to analyze situations will contribute to long, successful careers.
Barry Westling
My goal as an instructor is to give the students a base knowledge for critical thinking. I want them to be able to look at something when they are in lab, clinic or when they find a job and be able to pull from the information they have learned and know why they are doing what they are doing.
Jorge,
I think you have a good approach. Students are usually always more responsive when they find material interesting, and one way to do that is by relating stories. Students like stories. These can be examples, past good and bad experiences, and suggestions as to "always make sure you..." or "never make the mistake of...", follwed by a situation or circumstance that's likely to occur, or has occurred. When students can visualize themselves in situations, they remember and retain more essential information, plus the class is more enjoyable.
Barry Westling
My first goal is to make the subject matter relevant to what they will encounter in the workplace. Many of my students are already employed in the culinary industry. When the subject matter is academic in nature they sometimes find it difficult to generate enthusiasm for it. I try to present the theoretical material as a a series of guidelines that apply and illustrate the process perfecting their technical and as a springboard for their creativity.
Darlene,
Right. I think providing skills and knowledge is important, and needed. But if my graduate is not prepared for the work setting due to lack of or weak soft skills, they won't be successful. Therefore, I haven't helped completely without a tincture of taste about the soft skills required for their career area.
Barry Westling
We need to prepare students for their chosen career, so there are a variety of factors in educating students. Not only do we need to teach students "how to" we also need to teach them that the "soft skills," like being on time and getting along with others are just as important as the traiining and teaching of the skills they need to perform the job they have chosen.
