Understanding Learning Objectives
Why is learning how to construct learning objectives an important part of instructional planning?
@GerryHeideman
Learning objectives are very important. learning objectives motivate students . As an educator we must prepare the learning objectives for the students. The students know up front what they will be doing on any given day.
students might not take your course or class serious without proper learning objectives
Learning objectives gives you a map of where you are going and how you will know when you get there. If used correctly it will tell the student what they need and to know depth. t also gives me a guide as to what kind of questiosn I should be using for assessment.
With a well written learning objective the student understands what the outcome of the course is and what/how the content is applicable to their industry of choice.
It is important for students to understand what will be taught for the day and how to use those objectives to study for exams.
Objectives are what you measure results against. The more clear and focused your objectives the more one will be able to tell if the instruction was successful.
I agree; it also helps me stay on track. As several instructors have noted, the headliners on the white board, "yesterday", "today", and "tomorrow" are very helpful to both student and instructor. Also, in the particular set of classes I'm teaching at this time, I highlight the information that crosses over to each class. For example, the first kitchen lab and sanitation are taught during the same time frame and the majority of the information is present in both classes. I like to highlight the point to bring the info "home"!
Learning objectives allow instructors to create a road map of what and how they want to teach their classes. Begin with the end in mind is a statement I use allot when thinking about learning objectives.
So we know we are covering and satisfying accreditation and college standards. This also includes the students ability to pass national certification
It gives the instructor goals to meet as well as the students are informed on what they will be learning in the class.
i agree with sean learning how to construct learning objectives an important part of instructional planning.
Learning how to construct learning objectives is an important part of instructional planning since it is the foundation of the teaching plan and the layout of the syllabus. Learning objectives is also vital in showing what the takeaways from the course should be. This gives the students a solid goal in what they are achieving in the class rather than feel like they are aimless going to class without an end goal.
It tells the students how they are to learn course material. Before each class, I write on the blackboard the course objective for that unit of learning and under the lined the key words and explained how to applied it to learning. During the lecture, I asked questions that required the students used those objectives to answer the questions.
In my experience, teachers vary in the degree of precision with which they see the objectives they are pursuing in their teaching work. To make these objectives more explicit and to define them more clearly demands additional work from each teacher and an effort which ought to be rewarded by improved results. However, the instructor cannot hope for satisfactory results if the objectives sought are not related to the other aspects of instruction.
We as instructors often use formal assessments as the judge of progress. The students need daily mileposts to reassure them of their progress and to build their confidence that they are moving toward success. Daily learning objectives gives them a target to measure movement in the right direction.
I always remind my students that at the core of the lecture objectives lay the information they need to pass my course. I also emphasize the areas and or questions that will be asked on the midterm or the final exam. It makes them focus on the objectives and the standards that are required to pass the licensing board exam.
It is helpful when thinking about why the student is taking the course. There are always key issues or subjects that students really need to know and take from the class.
Learning objectives help you determine what content you will put into your course. It helps you to write lesson plans.
Not only does it give the students a preview of what they are expected to learn, but it provides a measurement tool at the end of the course to determine whether or not they have mastered all of the learning objectives of the course
