So that your students respect you and what you have to say.

Hi All,
Thank you all for the great responses concerning first impressions in classrooms. All of you have a clear understanding of how important it is to make a good first impression and set the tone for the class. This helps to focus the students on the course and what is going to happen in the coming weeks.
Gary

A positive first impression is important because it lets students know that you take the class seriously, i.e., that you cared enough about them, the college and yourself to show up prepared and organized. This will allow the students to emulate that behavior for the duration of the class.

A positive first impression sets the tone for the whole class. My first impression to my students was not good and now I have been trying to recover all quarter

I believe the first impression is important because it sets the tone for the relationship of the instructor to the students. You want to get off on the right foot and start with a positive impression rather than trying to re-sell yourself to the students as the course continues on.
Scott

I agree. It is important the way we approach the student in this first day, the way we dress, the way we receive them at the door, learning their names, explaining with passion and confidence what they will learn in this module.

Hi Ghazi,
What do you consider the most important aspects of making a positive first impression?
Gary

I do agree, the first impression will let the student respance easy to the course materal and they may like it and study harder to impres the teacher if they like the first impression.
most student remember the first impression about the teacher. How I kowe, I use to be one.

It is important to make a positive first impression when beginning a new class because it is what the students will remember first. If you gain their attention and engage them the first day, they will hopefully have more success throughout the entire course.

You only get one chance to make a first impression. Typically people judge you within your first 20-30 seconds from when you first meet. Therefore it is important to put your best foot forward with your students, so they have that positive first impression of you.

Hi Magaly,
Feeling important is so needed by students. What are some ways that you do this with your students?
Gary

Hi Kevin,
If you act professional and maintain leadership in the classroom/lab your students will respect you for your efforts. With your experience and desire to teach you will find that you will be thought of as a genuine instructor in spite of being young.
Keep up the good work.
Gary

I believe this is very import so the students will feel confident in what they will learn, how professional and prepared we are and how we care for them .

I have heard that many people form their impression after about 30 seconds. The first impression needs to be positive to get your class off to a successful start.

As a young teacher at a technical school, first impressions of me are that I am too young. I find it very important to highlight my field experience.

Making a good first impression is important. But, it is also important to continue this good start in subsequent classes. Students will benefit from such an approach.

A positive first impression is very important because it actually does set the tone for the entire course. Students will gain the respect of the instructor and will become motivated and empowered to carry out their responsibilities.

I have also found that a positive first impression will put students at ease and make them comfortable in a new environment. I like to reassure them that just as in real life situations their performance is simply practice to be improved upon and not to sweat the small things that can get them frustrated and stuck in one mindset or one topic. I have found that this is an easy way to make them comfortable and not as nervous about the course ahead raising their willingness to try new methods of learning.

A positive first impression sets the tone for the class. As a new instructor it is important to establish your credibility and earn the students respect. If you do not set yourself apart as the leader of the group they will take advantage of you.

Hi Jackie,
What are some strategies that you use to make the first impression on a new class of students?
