A positive first impression in class allows you to establish yourself as an instructor of quality and integrity. It allows the students to see your education history and what you bring to the table. In turn, they will have respect for the class and you as an instructor.
I think making a first impression is very important. Students will value you as an instructor if you appear to be knowledgeable, professional, organized, and prepared.
It is important to gain respect from your students. Make sure you give great eye contact, smile and this will make the class more comfortable with you.
It helps to reinforce the instructor as a positive role model for the class. Creating a bad first impression can be hard to overcome. If the instructor is not prepared, doesn't have the right supplies it increases student anxiety about the course.
First impressions set the tone for the class. A classroom or lab that is neat, orderly and prepared for the activities of that class will help to set everyone at ease and set the tone for a class that has direction and is meaningful. An organized classroom sets the tone for a good learning environment.
This sets the tone for the rest of the class. As an instructor, you should be setting the standards for your students and for your classroom. It is true in life and in the class room the importance of a frist impression.
Making a positive first impression is essential to creating excitment for the course with students. They need to feel that you are not only qualified to teach the course but actually are vested and want to teach the course. Your excitment can excite them!
Making a positive first impression is important because it gives the students the confidence that the intstructor is a leader and the information he/she is going to be presenting is well thought put and well planed.
Hi Jan,
What a great way for getting a class started off right. By knowing they have an advocate and mentor the students can be more focused on success throughout the course.
Gary
The students come to class not knowing what lies ahead and by being organized and positive the first days of the class, helps them realize that they can be successful. I highly agree that being a mentor for the student is what they all need.
A positive first impression will ensure your success in that particular class. The students, if you make a positive first impression, will respect you and treat you as the instructor and leader of the classroom.

I agree. The first impression is really important. To me, making a positive first impression means to establish a relationship with your students; let them know that you are available with any questions or concerns they might have. Also, being professional and well prepared to deliver the course content can also create a positive first impression. I think students will respect you more as a person if you are professional in delivery of content and well prepared.
Your first impression sets the mode of your class. I would want my students to be comfortable in the class and not willing to give up so easy.
A first impression is important when starting a new class because students naturally make judgment about the class based on their first impression of the instructor. A positive first impression of the instructor will more often than not cause the student to make an initial positive judgment about the class.
I totally agree, I think this module is extremely helpful, I have picked up so many great ideas and I can't wait to use them!
Hi Nancy,
What are some strategies you use to meet the list of attributes you shared with us? These are all great ways of supporting students so the more ways we all know how to do them the better our students will be served. Thanks.
Gary
it shows you are prepared, it shows you are assessacable, that you care, you are menter. and you suceed when they are suscessful
It sets the tone for the remaing classes
making a first impression is important because the students are going to communicate and learn through you. If your first impression is weak, they will feel negatively about the class and the instructor immediately.
Hi Jillian,
Right you are about having to use different strategies for getting online students to become invested in the course. What are some of the methods that you use to do such?
