Learning Styles

Describe a time when you facilitated a class using all the learning styles to help students learn the required materials.

While teaching cam degree in HotRod we use all of the methods to bring the material to the student.

Hi James - Although the usual order of things is lecture/PPT first, I think having the hands on first is a great idea. They will now have looked at the assembly and have questions about how it works. Excellent! Best wishes - Susan

When teaching automotive brakes, during the drum brakes portion of the class, I use training aids, which are drum brake set-ups on individual stands, and have each student take these apart and reasssemble them. After that task is completed, I open up the power point presentation and we discuss how drum brakes operate. At the end of the class presentation, I hand out crossword puzzles, word search puzzles and review questions. That pretty much covers everything and gives everyone a chance to explore all options.

I like to write and draw on the whiteboard to complment the powerpoint. Then for more visual learners, passing relevent components around the class puts a real object in hand to compare and picture in their mind. I like to give an actual practical application in the form of an experience I or a fellow technician dealt with in the field, and how it was diagnosed and repaired.

Hi Clayton - What you describe is an example of teaching excellence - Bravo! Susan

Most of the time due to the way our training is we use all of the learning styles in teaching our material. we lecture and use powerpoints, the students due cd based trainin, hands on demonstrations, Then during hands on testing students demonstrate and tell us what they are doing and explain procedure.

When I teach about power genertion, I feel I have to focus on alot of learning styles. One reason is because the students I have in class usually have experience with DC electricity and I teach alot about AC. So its kind of a new world. I do use power point and explainthe slides. But I usually have to draw on the board another way of looking at it compared to what the slides show. Then I like to go out in lab for a quick look, not only to get the students out of the seats for a minute but so we can touch alot of the parts we have been looking at on the slides. Also while out in lab I like to ask questions to bring what we learned in class back into mind.

Hi Michael - Your Wednesday class certainly reaches all the styles. As long as you use some of these delivery techniques in most of your lessons you will be teaching to all the styles effectively. Best wishes! Susan

On the first Wednesday of my course I present a lesson that comes very close to using all of the learning styles. I start out the lesson using a lectured style presentation along with a PPT presentation. As the lecture goes on I share humorous real life incidents that have happen in the field that relates to the topic being discussed. I’ll then switch to an audio presentation of one area of the concept being taught followed by a short discussion of what was presented. I then have the student’s watch a video presentation of what we have covered in class up to that point to allow them to get a visual presentation of how all the concepts taught comes together. At the conclusion of the video I hand out an activity that is hands on and walk the class through this activity as a group step by step. When we finish the hands on activity the paperwork is passed forward so I can examine each students work to see if they have mastered the technique. Finally I return to the original lecture style presentation to finish the remainder of the lesson

i use power points, a lot of show and tell items and ask questions to check students learning.

I use as many techniques and traing aid available. This helps keep interest.

After I cover the Thermo King components. I have the class review by completing a TK component review and color in the piping diagram. I find I get higher test results when they complete this type of review.

Welcome to Ed 103 Leonardo! You are definitely teaching to all the learning styles - excellent! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

The class that I teach is designed to be facilitated in a way that incorporates all types of learning styles. For example, we start of by completing web base courses with the option of audio or close caption. When my students have completed the pre-assigned web courses I lecture about the material that was covered on those courses with the aid of Power Point and Training Aids. After we have completed a review encompassing the web material we complete lab tasks that are designed to support the material that has been covered beforehand. At the end of the day all learning styles have been used:
• Auditory
• Written
• Visual
• Kinesthetic

Hi Jeff - Welcome to ED 103. Your classroom is a perfect example of teaching to the learning styles! You run a dynamic classroom, adapting to the needs of your students. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

During any one chapter the students in my class get PowerPoint, Lecture, Deminstrations, Training aids are passed around, and they perform Hands on Lab procedures.
Sometimes this may happen in the course of one day and some times over several days. However my methods change with every class, based on the interaction and questions from the students.

Hi Milton - Welcome to ED 103! You are certainly addressing all the learning styles in your classroom - great work! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

In Electrical you must use all combinations. you use power point for visual, have them read instructions and list procidures, they have to have Auditory to understand the format and finally Kinesthetic to put it in use Demonstration. Naturally they must do projects more than once or twice to fully understand the material.

Many iof the learning styles are covered duting a class presentation, PP is visual, and lecture is audible, with demonstrations and passding around training aids covers tactile, andreading reviews and text for testing. all are blended daily to inforce the material.
