I cen see this working for small groups of students, but how can we apply it to large groups that need to receive the material all together?

Determine the different learning styles of students and apply different teaching styles to apply.

Hi Kimberlee, Thanks for your post to the forum. I know you will find that teaching to the learning styles is very rewarding!

I know now that learning styles are very important. I will be more careful not to just teach in the style I prefer and incorporate as many styles as possible.

Thank you,
Kimberlee Smith

I only have the students for three weeks at a time, and getting to know how they learn in a short amount of time can be tough. The course is set up for the different learing styles. First we start with lecture and then the students go home and read about and then they come back to class and perform tasks based upon that subject. Next the test about the subject. By performing in this manner I have found that I can get the different types of learners to retain the information. Even in that short amoumt of time. I am also always looking for new ways to expand on these different meathods of learning.

Hi Cynthia - Here is an assessment that I use - http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/ilsweb.html

Can anyone recommend a learning style assessment I can utilize for my class? I get a new group of students every 4 weeks and sometimes I cant pick up on each students style right away.

Hi John, I'm glad that you found this brief course useful!

When I teach again in September I am going to ask the class (without indicating who they are) their preferred modes of intake and study. As I teach legal courses, I believe that expanding from the traditional lecture or Socratic method will be useful to the students who learn in other ways. I am also going to try more small group activities and team play to aid in the lesson plans. I enjoyed this section.

As someone who predominantly learns through written word, I am now more acutely aware of the other modalities of learning. I will try and branch out and present even more hands on learning opportunities and visual opportunities to aid the students. This lesson was very interesting.

I have not tried this in the past but I believe this is a great idea. It will help me tailor my lectures to the students who usually number in about eight to ten per class. I am also going to try and present the information in additional formats to make the lectures more interesting and helpful to the students.

Being new to teaching, (1st year) knowing how students absorb or deflect information is key to self assessment. Getting students to understand concept instead of memorizing takes knowing how different learning styles can be incorporated into a certain amount of time. I found this course to be important as a tool to self assess and make adjustments in teaching. I also found I may have a mixed bag if you will, of students learning ability. Some classes more auditory than visual. Each class is different. I do have a question. How can an Instructor ever get comfortable with subject knowledge when students differ from one class to the next?. In other words, I may have to change lecture times and visuals with each class. Thanks. I look forward to more courses. Thanks.

Hi Thomas, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, it's important that students understand that although there is a style of learning that they prefer, there are other styles that they will inevitably encounter in the workplace. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Knowing the learning styles of your students in a technical environment helps your students understand the complex nature of the industry once they start trouble shooting and facing some of the problems that come in all learning styles without notice. I try to get all of my students to understand that there is not just one form of learning once it comes to industry.

Hi Tammy - I am glad that you are excited about teaching to the learning styles! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I think this is HUGE!! I guess I need to see how or if I can adjust my lecture. See if admissions does a test on m students on their way in, if not do one, then put things in students hands as we are lecturing so, they can learn more!!!

It is important to know the different learning styles of my class, because this can help me deliver a better lecture and higher results.
