In my field I can lecture, demo and then we have lab where they perform. This show me that the students are learning. I take it one more step and review the lab and very happy with the interaction with the students. This would make three times that they grasp the info. Repetition is the key.
By knowing styles of students all will learn or get the most out of the course material.
Hi Emilie, Thanks for your post to the forum. Being able to pick up cues by students faces and body language is a great advantage! When I teach online I miss that a lot! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I usually have quite small classes and I will have the same students over and over again so I get to know how they learn and I get to learn their facial expressions. I have learned to read my students faces to see if they understand the information, if they don't I try another way of teaching it and ask questions to see what they have understood so far.

By understanding the differences in students learning, i can focus on the students who i can possibly use to help other students who are struggling by teaming them up in groups. This way, the students not only feed off each other, but i can also keep the whole class on track toward the goals set forth for the day.
Spending time knowling their learning styles can save a lot of time. One does not have to repeat material in order for students to gain an understanding.
Hi Daniel, Thanks for mentioning an important point. Learning styles are significant outside of the classroom as well, because we are constantly taking in information. So, understanding how colleagues, friends and family learn can be very useful! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I have found that understanding the learning styles of people you are involved with on a daily basis can significantly increase your daily understanding of life in general. As an instructor I try to incorporate learning styles of all methods into my instruction that way I can make sure that my course is being understood across the board.
I usually pick one day to lecture to my students, another day for book work or worksheets and another day to experiment. So of the 4 days I have to review a chapter I pick something different. If I can't think of anything for an experiment I usually play a game which students really enjoy

I could'nt agree more. It is our job to ensure learning is achieved.
Knowing the learning style of the student is the corner stone of effective teaching. Very often one may hear a student say" he/she is such a good teacher". Beng a good or effective teacher is getting the point across in a way the student will understand. To guarentee comprehension by the student konwing the learning style is key.
You able to relay information better . You have a connection with students. Discussions flow better.
It not only gives them knowledge of the subject matter, it helps them to grasp the information as well.
The instructional benefits of knowing learning styles of my students will help me develop better lessons that incorporate all modalities of learning. By knowing this, I can reach more students in class, by effectively conveying information needed to reach the course objectives. By reaching more students in my class, this helps me to be a more effective instructor.
