Knowingthe learning styles of your students will help you better understand how the student processes and receives information. It helps the instructor effectively plan lessons and activities that addresses the needs of all students.

If we are familiar with our student's learning styles, we are able to vary our instructional methodoligies to ensure we hit all participants in our target audience.

Prior to studying learning styles, years ago, I used to think the best way to learn was the way I preferred to learn as it was easiest for me. I now know this is not true and I ensure I vary my communication methods to ensure I cater to all individuals in the class.

It's a great benefit to know and understand the learning style of your students so you can incorporate it into your teaching plan. Often, the adult students at career colleges already know what kind of learner they are, so it is generally simple to gather this information. I try to incorporate as many styles as possible to try to reach each student and keep them interested.

I like to ask students during the first class how they interpret meaning, what methodology of instruction is preferred, and I incorporate their responses into my own content delivery. I like to use a variety of instructional methods because not only does it help the student gain confidence, it challenges my abilities. No one wants to be complacent.

Knowing the learning styles of my students always help me in tayloring my lectures and demonstrations to their respective needs and at the end of the day my effectiveness increases as an instructor. Being in the health care teaching field, I have access to lots of accessory material which helps me in addressing all 4 basic types of learners.

The benefits are being able to meet the learning styles for every type of students.

Instructional benefits of knowing the learning styles of my students allow me to better prepare and deliver the lesson content. For example, if I surveyed the class and found that most students were visual learners, I would tailor course content towards creating hand-outs and drawing and writing on the board.

I agree I ;ike to apply both visual & lectural examples of the process being tought

Benefits include developing different ways to teach the same material in different ways. You will always have a student that says, "I don't understand." To be an effective Instructor, you should be able to explain a concept in a way that is easily understandable to preferred learning styles.

The instructional benefits of knowing the different types of learning styles of our students is what will help make the instructor deliver the information to the student more effectively. I agree with all of the responses on this thread. If you tap into all of the different styles, then this will help you make sure you are reaching every student. This equals better understanding on the student's part and help to continue to gain their attention to the subject matter.

Alicia, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, when we can demonstrate the relevance of what our students are learning the more they will retain the information. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I always explain how the materials that I am teaching pertains to their course of study

I realize that if you know your students learning styles it is much easier to get them to participate in class. If you are presenting all four methods no one feels left out and you can feel the cohensiveness of the class. It's a great feeling when everyone gets the lecture.

Hi Saranna, Thanks for your post to the forum. So many students really have never thought about "How" they learn, so I find also that the assessments are very useful. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

usually asking the students as we begin to learn, how they best learn is the quickest and easiest way to figure these out. there are also class assessments that can help determine what kind of learners they are.
