Showing examples of student work

Why is it helpful to show your students examples of the work they will be doing in the upcoming course?

Provides interest, questions, and some are just visual learners.

I have a student display wall where I only show off the best neatest work and that sets the stage for what I expect from all students. It has to be perfect to make it to the display wall. I find that it make them thrive to have a project make it to the display wall.

Hi Patricia,

I think it allows them to relate, see what they can and will be doing, and also valued as the instructor chooses to keep their work and possibly show it off so it is not just wasted time but valued.

I do too

I give the students their grading rubric at the same time that I give the assignment. This helps them know exactly what is being graded and how.

Anthony,

I try to always provide an example. In some cases, the purpose is to give them an idea of how they would like to organize their work so the sample is only provided as a guideline of what is expected but they have a wide variety of ways to present it to the instructor.

Thank you.
Laura

When students can see examples of the work they will be doing, it helps to alleviate their insecurities. They won't need to ask themselves, "Am I doing this right?" because they have seen how to do it.

In addition, The tactile learners need to touch to have a better understanding. Presenting students with lab time gives them the necessary hands on training. This is very important in my field, pharmacy technicians, and any technical field. A real example from life and work experiences presents the students with a reflection of what work life will be like in their chosen careers. However, I now have a better understanding of the use of the syllabus as a tool in the classroom and incorporating the syllabus as an example of job description can be useful.

I think it important because it gives them a outlook on the course and what they have to look forward to!!

It will prepare them for the course and motivate them.

This helps the student understand what it will take to be successful on the job. Also give them feed back on how they are doing in class.

Hi Shon,
Students anxiety level is greatly decreased after being shown an example. It gives them the confidence that they can do it too.

This gives the student an idea of what to expect and can reduce performance anxiety in some students. It is important to consider that all learners are not at the same stage and there are different preferences involved. This is also another way to get students to think about what's coming and start a conversation.

Hi Charles,
Students take learning seriously when they realize that they will be held accountable for knowing in a future course.

Hi Kathleen,
Students get it when they can see it.

Hello Class:

It is helpful to show students examples of the work they will be doing in the upcoming course because that will prepare the students for the upcoming class section and also they will have the idea of what they are expecting in class. It also will improve student engagement in class.

Even though I always stress my project rubric to the students, they often have questions as to what exactly constitutes an "A". By showing the students an example of stellar work that has received a grade of 100, they have a better idea how they can achieve that goal.

Hi William,
Some students will just settle and do enough to get by. I do have some students that will put their best foot forward.

I like to show them what is acceptable work and what is not. I find that most students just want to do the least amount of work required, especially when going to school at night.
