this way they can get some knowledge of what they need to do before they do it

Hi Cenek,
Students have better clarity when they see a visual. They know exactly what is expected of them.

Patricia Scales

I show examples of previous students work to establish my expectancies.

Hi Sheila,
I have found that students really appreciate it when the instructor share examples. Students have a better understanding of the requirements after being shown an example.

Hi Abayomi,
Students better know what is expected of them when examples are shared.

Hi David,
Yes there are many advantages to sharing examples with students. Students gain better clarity when examples are shared.

It not only helps them understand the course it also encourages them to know that they will use the information they learn in the field. I try to make the course what they will use everyday in the field and focus on those aspects. I let them know that they have the books to refer to for the rest of their lives, they have my experiences to learn from for a brief time, and while they are welcome to come to me for information at anytime, I am here to help them understand the language between the book and the job. Which in our field can be totally different.

It sends a message to students that their work and their learning are important. So they learn to reflect on their work. It recognizes effort rather than perfection which can also affirm children’s growing sense of competency and give them practice in individual and group decision-making.

I think showing examples will both put the student at ease knowing what the course includes as well as excite them about what they will learn.

I was thinking about this last night as I graded assignments using a rubric that I inherited when I stepped in to cover a course. I wished an example of a fully comprehensive response and an example of a cursory response could have been included for the students. The rubric was not robust, and although one student might answer a question with a basically correct answer, another might do a far more comprehensive response with citations and evidence of critical thinking. Yet according to the rubric they both answered the question and earned the 10 points. If there was an example as well more clearly defined criteria, my scoring would have been a closer match to true demonstration of learning objectives.

Hi Chris,
Students get real motivated and confident when examples are shared.

It is helpful to show students examples of the work they will be doing in order to engage them in the course. Examples provide a rationale for learning by demonstrating how this will apply to their chosen career field. If students can see the end result they are more likely to buy into the course and realize it is worth their time to continue. Students have to feel there is value to what they are learning and the examples of what they will be doing can paint a better picture of that, especially when it can be related to the actual skills required in their career field.

Hi Gwen,
Sharing examples is a good way to reduce students anxiety. Students feel bette about doing the project after being shown an example.

Patricia Scales

Many students become anxious and struggle without and example when projects are assigned. An example seems to help them with that anxiety.

Hi Meri,
I concur! Visual certainly adds clarity. Students get it, when they see it!

Patricia Scales

Hi Gina,
Students need as much clarity as possible to ensure understanding. Sharing examples brings about better clarity.

Patricia Scales

Ms. Scales,

It is very helpful to show students examples of work that will be done during the course because it gives them a sense of clarity and understanding of what is expected of them during the course. Most students find it easier to understand what they will be doing by seeing the outcome first, especially if it is from a previous student, they can relate better and understand more what they will be accomplishing. Students in today's society learn by seeing and doing, and this will help facilitate learning.

It gives the students a more clear idea of what is expected of them. Sometimes we get so comfortable with what we are teaching we forget that this is all new to them. We can gauge the extent of their prior knowledge by seeing how they react to the examples.

Hi Latasha,
Students really do feel better prepared after being shown an example. Students are more eager to get started when examples are shared because they know exactly what needs to be done.

Patricia Scales

It will help to prepare to student for what is next and hopefully give the adult learner a positive outlook on what is to come.
