Hi Carmen,
Yes, students can be competitive when it comes to projects after being shown an example.
Patricia Scales
I agree with you. When I show an example of work to my new class they want to make it better than the example.
Hi Lori,
Students really know what is expected of them after being shown an example.
Patricia Scales
I feel it is imperative to show the student examples so they know what is expected of them and there is no surprises.
Hi Betty,
Visual makes for better understanding. Most people need to see it in order to understand it.
Patricia Scales
Hi Brandi,
Yes! Competition in this sense is not a bad thing when students want to do better than the previous students by topping what they have put together.
Patricia Scales
I find that showing examples of student work not only gives them a better visual understanding of what should be done but can also ignite creative competition. Many students see the example and want to do a project or work that's even better than the example, with the hope that their work will be used as a future example. As a result, each class strives to do better than the class before them, and the quality of the assignments often show great improvement.
giving them a completed assignment will give them an idea of what is expected of them and also an idea of how to do it. Giving them a visual is giving them the knowledge that they
can do it to.
Hi Imelda,
Our students need to be put at ease as much as possible. Examples reduces fear and provides better clarity.
Patricia Scales
It eases their anxiety regarding the course.
Hi Charlotte,
Examples really aid in many questions! Students know exactly what is required of them.
Patricia Scales
Hi B.,
Yes, you have it! Never lower standards! Always make students rise to the challenge.
Patricia Scales
It helps the student know what is expected in the class and what, if any, the final project may look like, if the instructor has a final project paper to show the class.
Students learn in different ways. A visual/physical project they can touch makes it real. It can inspire ideas and inspire different ways to approach a topic. I typically show examples of acceptable and exemplary work but I also show mediocre and poor presentations so that the class gets an idea of what is acceptable or not. Set the bar at a an achievable level and students will rise to the expectation
Hi Harmony,
Examples allow students to see exactly what is required of them. Students better understand through the use of examples.
Patricia Scales
Using this practice presents what is expected of them and how to prepare for class.
Hi Vincent,
Students really want to know how things are in the real world. Every opportunity we get, we need to let students know how things really are in the real world.
Patricia Scales
I am in a career college that actually produces projects that will be used during he students work experiences. By physically showing them these tools of their trade and how they will be utilized in the future will hopefully blend school with real world scenarios.
Hi Robert,
Yes, sharing examples with students is very motivating. Students know exactly what is required of them by seeing an example. Visual adds better clarity.
Patricia Scales
Showing examples of the work they will be doing gives the students a clear and concise view of what to prepare for in class. By seeing the examples the can gather ideas and prepare there focus for the task at hand. I find that showing both examples of previous anonymous students work is also a good starting point in projects in the arts. Coupled with samples of professional works as well this provides a broad picture of the growth within their respective fields. Do others also find that presenting previous works from students is helpful in providing inspiration with their students?
