Hi Laura,
Visual learning provides great clarity.

Patricia Scales

Hi Patricia,

I find rubrics to be necessary to maintain objectivity when trying to distinguish excellent, average, and poor work. Giving them a practice grading assignment will show them how the rubric works and what grade they can expect to receive.

Kathy

Very creative, Maryellen! I like using your own work as a means for evaluation.

Kathy

So they know what the expectation is and it gives them a visual. It also gives an opportunity to ask relivant questions.

I think it is important to show students examples of student work to show them what I may expect, also it helps jump start them when they know what to expect and they can add their own ideas. I have found that students sometimes need a little help in the beginning and then they are able to just take off with confidence.

Hi Mary,
Super! Students having a visual to go by adds great understanding/clarity.

Hi Nicole,
I want do not want any confusion. I like my students see an example of what is excellent work, average work, and poor work.

I find my students have less anxiety aboutthe upcoming term project if they can see previous students projects both good and poor examples. It help set the expectations right up front. I keep the examples in class and they can look at themanytime. I also have industry examples both good and bad. I find they refer to them often and assess their own work.

I agree . Students like to have something concrete to look at and guide them to what the expectations are. I have done , as some have mentioned, use acceptable and unacceptable work. Again it reinforces what the rubric is telling them to do .I use it as a tool to see if they coud pick out what things should not be done.(references not cited correctly, grammar).

I really like the idea of not telling them if the work is acceptable or poor. Their comments will also give me some information and input about them and the thought processes that they are going through in regards to the assignment. It may also offer me some suggestions as to what could be changed in my directions for the assignment.

I agree with Jarrett's comment.
I go over the assignment's requirements and show successful examples from previous classes.
I show how the examples met the requirements and also where some aspects were not met. I think it's good for them to see work of their peers, and to see exactly what's expected for a given assignment.

Hi Anthony,
That's right! Examples provide great clarity and bring about a very calming atmosphere.

Patricia Scales

It gives them am idea of what to expect. Makes them feel more comfortable and less stressed

When I showed examples of student work in the classroom. I got some really good feedback from my students.

Hi Bronzel,
Expectations are clearer when examples are shared.

Patricia Scales

I think it is important to show your students examples of the work for many reasons. One is so they will know what to expect from you the instructor. Second they can see the work of the upcoming course to better prepare themselves for success.

Hi Audrey,
Some instructors frown on sharing a wrong example, but I think this practice can be a great learning tool for students, especially if you have the students indicate what's wrong.

Patricia Scales

Hi Carlos,
Expectations are very clear when examples are shared.

Patricia Scales

Hi Michael,
When students understand how the course applies to their career, they understand the course relevancy, and they develop a great sense of excitement.

Patricia Scales

Hi Donna,
Students really do get a better idea of expectations when they have been shown an example.
