Hi Tanya,
Students really feel better prepared when examples are shared with them based on upcoming assignments/projects.

It may help them better prepare for the course work. Some of my students like to use outside sources and incorporate stories from family in regards to future work they may have. Shows there interested also if they have the oportunity to know the upcoming course.
Hi David,
That's right! Students will clearly be able to see quality work verses poor work.

Hi Erin,
Having a visual adds great clarity. Students have a better understanding when they can see what is to be done.

Most students fall in the visual learning category and as such having an example to work from is essential to learning that particular task. In the legal field, it is crucial that you follow the court rules for formatting, page limits and other criteria. Having a sample that has met the test is key to giving something to the court they can rely.
Showing examples will show the student what to expect from the course and make clear the difference betwwen excellent and poor work.
Hi Toni,
Absolutely! There is nothing like clarity! Students are more motivated when they understand exactly what needs to be done.

It is good to show students examples of what they will be doing so they know and understand what is to be expected of them.
HI Charles,
You are right! No one likes to walk into anything blind sided. I like how you make this applicable to on the job.

Hi Lisa,
Sometimes students only need a quick glance so that they can use their own creativity, and make the assignment truly theirs, however I have known some students they need to carefully examine things. I share a model that is fully discussed and shown to students, but I emphasize they need to use their own creativity.
Patricia Scales
Leading through example is typically best; therefore I prefer not to display the poor papers. Viewing past students’ successes launches a sense of self-assurance which decreases anxiety and establishes a rapport with the students and the instructor. The stellar works are honored and shared with other learners to hopefully stimulate motivation toward their own achievements. Yet, a visual model could diminish the creativity that truly enhances the individualism I so encourage. I make papers available to all my students when they ask only and then only a quick glance.
By showing your students examples of the work they will be doing in the upcoming course, you are basically following the real world work scenario. Similar to how you start a new job, there is usually a new hire orientation. By covering the syllabus, and giving them a snapshot of the course, they will have a firm understanding of the nature of their course, the activities/assignments involved, and their expectations for being successful.
Hi Travis,
I concur! We should have very high expectations for our students and provide clarity so that they are successful.

Hi Gary,
Examples really do help students gain a better understanding as to what is expected of them.
Patricia Scales
Examples give students both an idea of what is expected throughout the course and it also lets them know the topic areas that they may need to delve into with more depth. It also provides a sort of outline that will help them study smarter.
Showing examples manages expectations and in my opinion expectation management in any situation relieves stress and allows students to self time manage. These are both critical to a managable classroom and less stressed students.
Hi Christine,
I concur! Visual adds great clarity so that students better know what is expected of them.

I know that I am a visual learner, and I expect that many students are too. By seeing an example, it may trigger an idea to get them started, and also help to clarify the expectations.
Sometimes it is the only way most students will grasp a new concept. I have found out that if I show the good and bad examples, I get better results from my students. They seem to appreciate the examples very much.
Hi John,
Absolutely! When students know that the game is realistic/attainable, they get excited about the project/assignment.
