So they know what to expect from me and from the course. That will give them ideas to help guide them in their work.
Hi David,
You are right, this is a great way to ease apprehension. Students need to be put at ease as much as possible. School can be very stressful/frightful to some students.
Patricia
this helps take away some of the fears of the unknown. it will also get them excited for what they are going to learn and be able to do. it also help set a level for them to acheive towards
Hi Alex,
Things are a lot clearer whenever students can be shown as to what is expected of them. Students need clear guidelines as to how things should be done, and visuals add great clarity.
Patricia
Hi Kimberly,
Examples are great! They are no gray areas, you know exactly what to expect.
Patricia
Having a good idea of what the instructor expects is important. I know in one of the schools I'm attending it seems like every time we change professors, even though they are suppose to be following the same guidelines, each is different in what they expect. It is hard sometimes to figure a professor out when you only have them for 6 weeks before moving onto a new one. I think examples would be a better way to communicate.
I think showing students real world examples of the type of work they will be doing and how it is used in the workforce sets goals for the students.
Students who are shown examples of work they will be completing in the upcoming course will have a clear idea of the expectations of the course. They take the example and change it to their individual needs or wants and fit it into their worldview. This creates positive visualization in students' minds also.
It gives the student a clear understanding of what is expected of him
It helps the students to get off at a good start
Hi Luis,
Students tend to really get it whenever examples are shown. You are right students know exactly what direction to go in. Students love being shown examples.
Patricia
I am instructing students in a photography program that is only 3 years old on the campus. Having specific examples to show in the classroom as well as pointing out work of former students has steadily raised the bar of quality and expectations.
My students, because it is a matter of quality and professionalism need to see the difference between taking pictures ( which everybody already knows how to do ) and capturing incredible images which requires cognitive, psychomotor and perhaps even social skills when working with a group or partner as well as a model or technical writer.
By showing examples of good and bad work, students can see what are the components the instructor values and is looking for. It gives a target of what the students need to aim for when working on the projects and activities in the course.
I believe that it is helpful to show your students examples of the work they will be doing in the upcoming course because it helps to illustrate the expectations that you as an instructor have of your students. It is a very visual examply of your expectations.
Hi Jennifer,
Students like to and need to know what is expected of them. Examples are a sure way to clear up any confusion.
Patricia
Hi Delbert,
It is certainly a great confidence builder. Students get the idea/thought that they can really do the assignment, and they get motivated to do it.
Patricia
In order to give them an idea of what expectations the instructor will hold them to.
showing examples of student work reinforces the skills and knowledge that the student has learned. It can also build confidence.
I teach a business course and one project is to write a business plan. This is a team assignment
and can be very intimidating. I share finished business plans completed by students from my previous classes and direct then to "sample" business plans on the internet. Also direct then to the SBA and SCORE websites.
It keeps the students interested and gives them an idea of what to expect during the course.
