It gives them an idea of how the finished assignment looks like. Some times guidance is needed.

To manage and set expectations

Hi Rita,
Competition can cause one to work harder, thus resulting into better results.
Patricia

Students wil get competitive thus trying harder to do the best!!

Students will gain a better idea and perspective on the kind of work they will be doing, thereby decreasing the "unknown" factor and apprehension they may have about the course.

Since I teach cooking I have the students present their plates with their names on the bottom. I then ask students to pick out the best/not-so-good plates and have them explain what they like or what they would have done to make the plate better. As time goes on I then have the names visible so that each student learns to take criticism in a positive manner. Helps build character.

When I was a student learning the culinary arts I can remember watching a chef make a dish that I had never seen before. Each step he went through I would try to visualize what he was doing and why. It was hard to follow his step-by-step procedures because I had no idea what he was making. Now that I'm teaching I try to make sure the students see, either the real thing or a picture/video of what I am going to be making. Yes, it helps greatly, to have a visual of what you're going to be learning as the teacher is discussing/showing how to produce the end product.

It gives them a defined goal to work towards, plus it gives them a visual sample to guide them. Helps set expectations.

Hi Veronique,
Great response. It is an effective technique. We need to put our students at ease as much as possible.
Patricia

Hi Pamela,
As instructors we should want to minimize anxiety, tension, fear, etc. as much as possible, and one way to do this is to provide work examples.
Patricia

Hi Sean,
Students appreciate being shown an example. Students know exactly what you want from them. There is no guessing.
Patricia

Hi Tonia,
Absolutely! A guide puts students so much more at ease. There are no gray areas, the students know and have seen the requirements.
Patricia

In my opinion it will give students a guide of the work to present.
it will be a clear understandin g of the expettation.

Showing your students examples of the work that they do gives them a better sence of what to expected. Given examples is especially effective they the example relate to future courses or employment.

To see what is in it for them. I teach at a technical school so the students are learning a trade. I show them some of my past work history. They get to see what they could be doing after they finish school.I find it easier to teach the students when they know that I am not just teaching from a book but have "been there, done that" so to speak.

Hi James,
Students feel very proud whenever their work is worthy by the instructor to be used as an example. We need to showcase our students abilities every opportunity that presents itself.
Patricia

Hi Shannon,
Clarity produces better results.
Patricia

Hi Christopher,
Quality is everything! We must set the standards high for our students.
Patricia

Hi Christine,
Showing examples is such a super motivator. Seeing is believing. Most students need to visualize in order to fully grasp things.
Patricia

Many students are visual learners and don't have a clue as to what is expected of them. Students are not mind readers and if I have a certain way I want them to do a project,I must show them. Students understand and interpret instructions differently and what you have in mind might be totally different than how they see it. However, if I show them example, I don't want them to duplicate it, but allow them to use their own creativity. I found that sometimes just showing the example is enough to "kickstart" an idea.
