Showing examples of the work students will be doing helps them visualize the work expected of them. It can help them feel more comfortable knowing the length and complexity they should strive to achieve.

Hi Angela,
It is a great way to ease fear and build confidence.
Patricia

I find that it often calms their fears. When you give an assignment, sometimes their imagination makes them think that it is harder then what it really it. An example of the work shows them that it's not as bad as they might thought.

visuals are always helpful to break barriers of misunderstanding

This will help them understand better and make it more comfortable for them

I find that if the students know exactly what I am expecting they can move forward with the project and then they can use their creativity to embellish on the project while still making sure they have met my expectations

Students appreciate the opportunity to see what the end product should "look like". If they are allowed to look at samples a few times throughout the course, it offers an opportunity for students to compare their work to the sample (of course, the examples will vary depending on the type of class).

This is important because it removes some anxiety that many students have about the course requirements, and assignments. Students can be very apprehensive about not only if they will understand all directions related to a particular assignment, but also, whether they feel that they can actually complete the assigned tasks. By sharing with them examples of past completed assignments, and projects, and explaining a little about what went into completing them, many of the fears, and trepidations that students may have can be reduced, or even removed.

I'll actually show them great samples.. give them something to reach for, as well average samples, so they don't feel intimidaded by the upcoming projects.

I think it helps them mentally prepare and get excited about learning what is to come.

I think it is helpful to both show examples and have students evaluate examples, if time allows. In my classes, I will show examples of work. Then, I will give students the rubric and additional examples and have them "grade" or evaluate the work to clarify exactly what I expect.

Hi Betsy,
It is extremely helpful to show an example to students. Students tend to really get it after being shown an example. Examples are great motiviation and confidence boosters.

Hi Joyce,
Students appreciate having guidelines to follow. Visual adds clarity.
Patricia

Hi Troy,
I have seen it numerous times where students have surprised themselves based on their accomplishments.
Patricia

It is important to show examples of work they will be doing in the upcoming course for a couple of reason: 1) the students will understand what the course assignments look like and know how they will be graded and 2) it may provide the students a look at what they will be doing in their future career.

Hi Laura,
Visuals are highly appreciated by students. Things become really clear to students whenever they can see the finished product.
Patricia

Hi Jan,
Students really are encouraged by seeing examples. It truly gives them a great sense of motivation.
Patricia

Hi Janet,
Seeing is believing! Examples serve as a great confidence booster as well...they get the feeling, I can do this.
Patricia

Hi Terri,
So much clarity is added whenever examples can be shared.
Patricia

By showing examples of the work they will be doing ahead of time it actually helps keep them engaged and interested in the course and its content.
