Hi Michelle,
What an exciting course to teach. I could see those finished garments through your response. You have grat visuals to get your students excited and involved.
Patricia

Hi Charlotte,
Great clarity is added from being shown an example. It is also a super confidence builder.

Since I teach patternmaking for fashion design, the students definitely want to see finished garments that they will be able to make by the end of the class! I always have all the projects for the class on dressforms on the first day of class so the students can see them and get excited as they come in. Then I use the finished projects throughout the term as examples, which I can refer to again and again. I find the samples help even when we're working on a different project, because I can show what different pocket styles look like, or different zipper applications. The students tend to be very visual, so physical samples are the best way to convey information to them.

Showing examples of students' work helps students have a clear idea about what is expected of them. This forces some students to work harder, yet it also eases some students' fears. It sets clearer expectations than just an assignment.

I think it is helpful to show students examples of the work they will be doing in the upcoming course because it gives them something to look forward to. It allows them to see the road path they must take to able to part take in the upcoming activities. It may also spike them interests and allow them to set goals for themselves.

Having clear expectations is the best way to have those needs met. Without having clear examples of ther work your students will be doing leads to confusion and disappointment on the part of the students and the instuctors.

This gets them interested in the work they will be doing and ask questions that they might not even know they had

Love visuals!

Hi Candice,
Great points mentioned. Students get a better understanding after being shown an example.
Patricia

Hi Don,
Showing examples will definitely instill confidence in students. Students believe that if they did it then I can do it.
Patricia

Showing examples of work students will be doing in the course helps set expectations. "Show and tell" illustrates for them what is expected and allows you to explain and/or demonstrate the relevance of what the course will cover to what they can expect to be asked to do in their chosen careers.

This allows the students to develop a rationale for learning. The steps taken here set the foundation of the course. This raises the bar by showing students what others have accomplished as a result of taking the course. Supplementing this with career field examples increases the impact in a plus way.

I teach at a Culinary School and my students are very visual. I usually like to bting in books with photos of what they will be making in class that day.

Hi Karen,
I even have one of my colleagues read my directions to determine if everything is clear.
Patricia

Hi Jacqueline,
I've heard the same saying from students, but students must learn how to adapt. One may not keep the same boss forever in the workplace.
Patricia

I think showing examples allows the students to see what the end product should look like. Some students when you give a project or assignment have issues getting started because they are not sure of how it should turn out. Showing examples lowers the anxiety and gives them a place to start.

Because it will show what the outcome will be and show what they will be working on.

Hi Kevin,
Seeing is believing. It gives them the confidence that they too can do it!
Patricia

Hi Julie,
Visual adds clarity, and we need to do all we can to put our students at ease.

I always keep the best presentation paper out of every class I teach. I do this so I can show the next group of students what I expect and how a good paper should look and read. My students feel this is a great way to show them what is expected of them especially because I think most students are visual learners like me.
