Hi Sabrina,
Clarity is very important in order for one to do well. Students love being shown examples.
Patricia

They will have a clear understanding of your expectations and what they have to do to earn the desired grade in the class

Showing examples will help the student relate to their course of study and feel more comfortable with the class as they begin.

Hi Diana,
Showing examples serve as a great jump start for students. The examples give them motivation and confidence to have at it.

Some students have a hard time in relating the question to the actual assignment that is required for completion. There will also be students that need a little motivation to start their creative juices flowing in a manner that will assist the learner meet the course objectives and assignments.

because it becomes more understandable to them.

Showing examples of upcoming work allows the student to develop a frame of perspective which also aids in expectation and can help to reduce anxiety.

Hi Scott,
I understand! We certainly do not want to scare our students off. Perhaps, once you get to that particular concept you can first explain an example and then show examples of work as to not to scare students.
Patricia

Hi Loida,
Absolutely! Knowing what to expect really reduces anxiety.
Patricia

It helps to clarify the expectations you will be having. It can also alleviate ambiguity and concerns regarding difficulty of lesson plans.

I think it is important to show student's work so they know exactly what to expect and they are more well-prepared.

I am not sure it is. I teach Algebra, and if I was to show them the work that was coming in the next 10 weeks I am sure I would scare a few students out the door. On the positive side, an application problem dealing with motion might work if I could show it applied to an area of degree that they were trying to obtain.

Scott

Hi Kathleen,
In my Career Readiness class I have a sample portfolio to share with students. It adds a lot of clarity and confidence for the students. The students get to see the finished product of exactly what is needed for the job search process, such as a resume, cover letter, letters of recommendation, reference sheet, awards, etc.

Many students may be anxious about course content and how they will cope, especially if they have been out of education for some time. Showing examples of course work can help alleviate this anxiety and make them more comfortable.

Hi Carl,
Absolutely. Showing examples produces clarity.

Hi Molly,
You may want to trying showing just an average paper ("C") so that student can see the difference in quality of work.
Patricia

I design the assignments for other instructors to carry out. So I have developed the same problems for each class to solve concerning seeking employement or contract work. The students are to work in groups with the idea the intraction will stimulate their responses. They have materials that cover this information i.e. how to research the company and what questions to ask during the interview. If I give a sample, that becomes the answer. My problem is making the assignment clear, but allowing the students the interaction and integrating the lecture and reading materials they have into responses on the work sheets which are set out step by step

Showing an example of an A work would help the student know what is the required to get an A.

I do this with my lab reports for biology and the ethics paper for my radiology course. There is a very wide range of papers that I get handed in to me and I show the "gold standard" that one or more or their peers have written, that way, they can see that it is do-able!

to know what they are doing and expected of
