Showing examples enables the student to visualize what is expected for their project. Many times students have an idea of what is expected, but are unclear about what really is expected. Examples clarify expectations. I also like to supply students with a rubric to further clarify expectations and so they know how they will be graded.
To give them an understanding of the course requirements and to build confidence in their ability to participate in the course.
Hi William,
Try it you will hear students make comments, such as I see what it takes to pass, fail, get a a good, etc.

Patricia,
Your type examples make sense to me. I will try the A,B, and F approach. Thanks.

William
Gordon,
You are on the right track. Examples would be appropriate for your course with the internationals.
Examples give concrete support to what the Instructor/Teacher is trying to convey.
Hi Robin,
Clarity is key for understanding. Visual puts things in perspective for most students. Seeing is believing, believing that I can do this...
Patricia
Hi Justin,
Visual adds clarity. Students need as much clarification for simplicity/understanding as possible.
Patricia
So they will have a better understanding of what to expect.
Hi William,
A finished example of what the assignment is. I like to show an excellent example "A", an average example "B", and a failing example "F" so that students get it, and they see what they need to do to get an A, otherwise . . .
Hi Robert,
Samples are certainly the way to go. They really simplify things for students.

Work samples are always very helpful, no matter what type task is going to be accomplished. this could be a written assignment or hands on project.
It will prepare them for what to expect from the course and what it takes to be successful in the course. What types of examples work the best?
Because they will know exactly what is expected of them! There should be no confusion!
A visual example of acceptable work done by previous classes clarifies verbal and /or written direction and shows current students what is necessary to achieve sucess in the class.
Because it engages the student in the course material. It motivates learning, it excites them, and encourages academic growth. Students can identify more readily to what will be required of them, and hopefully the more examples that are given, the more the material will make sense to them, and connect it to other classes their taking.
I think it is important to show our adult learners what our expectation is. I know that sometimes we say "this paper is due by this time" and they complete what they think "this paper" is, but its not what we expected. I find for myself, I have to remember that even though I know the material, they are just learning it.
I have one course that they put together a portfolio of their work and I always show them mine. They like it because it looks impressive and lets them know that they are perfectly capable of doing the work since someone else has already done it.
They have a sense of pride in having a hand in future students learning from them and getting ideas on how projects can be done.
Hi Linda,
We want to provide our students with as much clarity as possible. Showing examples will give students clarity as well as confidence.
