Because "a picture is worth a million words" really does ring true when students need guidance on what the educator is looking for in an assignment.

Saving, explaining, and showing proper examples of student work can help in new students see proper outcomes when starting graded tasks. When reviewing a syllabus with new students, grade rubrics- along with class expectations are also introduced for various subjects. Students sometimes tend to over-plan or react when a project is introduced; so having examples of past outcomes can help students sometimes simplify their situation rather than overthink and complicate their classwork.

Hi Roberto,
Visual seems to really put things in perspective for students. Visual also serves as a great confidence builder.
Patricia

It will give the students an idea of they will be seeing in the course which can help them assess what they know about the subject and where they will be needing some help.

It will help the students to get a jump start on what you expect in the course and the proper style, amount, and context. victoria

It is important for students to understand what is expected of them and how other students accomplished the assignment. It allows the student to visualize what exactly the instructor is looking for. Some students are very competitive and want to do better than other students. They want to be recognized for their accomplishments. I put stickers on test or assignment papers such as "Good work", "way to go", "excellent", or stars. This gives the student a sense of pride and they can show it to their children or family members to say "See what I accomplished!".

I hold up a programmable thermostat and pass it around and ask my students if they know how to program it. I let them try for a few minutes and then inform them that they will understand how to accomplish this task at the journeyman level when this training module is complete.

Hi James,
Students are definitely motivated and interested whenever the "why" can be answered.

Hi Charlesetta,
Emulation is certainly a natural part of us! If someone else can do whatever, we think we can do it too.
Patricia

Hi Michael,
It may even better prepare them to do well on the assignment for the current course. Examples provide clarity for better understanding.
Patricia

Hi Gregory,
The instructor needs to make sure the example is meaningful. It may take some explaining on the instructor's part. It may even be a need for each student to skim the written assignment.
Patricia

Allows them to visualize. They may not have any idea what it looks like (sounds like, etc) without example. But--what if the student work expected is a final practical exercise? Or a written product? May be hard to show examples, or the example is relatively meaningless without close reading.
Greg

I think it better prepares them for the upcoming course

Providing examples gives the student a sense of ease. They are able to compare their work to the work of others and receive and gain ideas for their own submission. Emmulation is ingrained in human nature from the time we learn to walk, talk, and develop emotions.

It gives them something to look forward to. I always show them something new and different even if it was done in a different class becuase we all have our own ways of doing thins. This way the students are always asking "why" and i think this helps keeps them motivated.
