Hi Shannon,
Fair enough. You do a thorough job to ensure your students know exactly what is expected of them.

Hi William,
Wow, you must cover a lot of material in the course where it takes you three days. I go over what is to be covered in the course on Day 1.

Hi Lawrence ,
I like the idea of giving students reminders. We are really in the business to help our students succeed.

Patricia Scales

I go over everything the course covers in the first three day's.Also outline all of the course requirements and objectives.

Yes, I pretty much do the same: once they have the syllabuts, I go over it, in general. This means that test and workbook dates/deadlines are pointed out so they know where to find them within the syllabus. Then at the end of the week they are reminded what will be expected of them for the upcoming week: workbood assignments due, tests thatare scheduled, etc.

Students are given a syllabus that outlines what material will be covered in each week of the course. The students also receive a course calendar that lists the required assignments and due dates. They are also advised that the dates may change slightly. If I have to change a date for an assignment, I will tell them verbally and write it on the board. I makes sure I see each student making the corrections to due dates. A few times I have had students tell me that they did not know an assignment was due. I asked them to take out their course calendar and see what date they have marked. At the beginning of each week, I take out the course calendar and review the assignments for the week.

Hi Thomas,
It is good to give students a summary of what they are going to learn. Students have something forward to look to.

Hi Lawrence,
What do you do to let your students know exactly what is expected of them? I like to give my students reminders, I thoroughly go over the syllabus on the first day, I jot down deadlines on the board, I require that my students have a calendar to indicate when assignments are due, etc.

Patricia Scales

I always give a summerised form of everything what the students are going to learn and introduce all the important instrucuments especially in the clinical classes

Hi Troy,
Students like it when they have clarity as to what is expected of them.

This can sometimes be easier said than done, or observed. Often, it is not noticed that a student requires help until they are well into the course. We not only rely on the student coming to us to request help, but have the instructors meet and discuss various students in order to find those who appear to be heading for trouble. This approach oftentimes will be proactive enough to forestall problems before they become unmanagable.

I walk the student through the syllabus and each exam, lab, ad other class activities making sure to answer all questions and making sure they understand the requirements of each item.

Hi Lawrence ,
As quickly as we move we must always take the proactive approach with our students.

Patricia Scales

I have not experienced that as a generational thing. What we have to watch for is the student who came out of high school without having established good study habits, and those who have been out of the academic world (working, raising a family) that they must re-learn that skill. In both cases, we encourage them to form study groups as well as ask the instructors for additional help as needed. In an accelerated program such as ours it is important to attend to this as quickly as possible, before the student gets in real trouble and falls behind.

Hi Scott,
Students love to be shown things. Visual really makes things a lot clearer.

Patricia Scales

When going through the course outline on the first day I walk them through their labs and show them what engine they will perform the lab on. I also give them a summary of each subject matter and make them aware of what we will be covering.

Hi Tiffany,
You go above and beyond to ensure your students have great clarity. They have no excuse for not knowing exactly what is expected of them.

Patricia Scales

I highlight text on syllabus, speak abotu them in class, and write them on the board and ask students to repeat them

Hi Lawrence,
I have learnerd that different Generations of students have different needs.
Patricia Scales

Hi Julia,
Students need to fully understand exactly what is required of them in order to set proper goals.
