I think it is so important to follow through with each student---it helps them feel important and, our students need people in their lives to make them feel important.
very good points Thomas. It really makes them more accountable to themselves and to you
I feel that it is SO IMPORTANT to follow through with an assignment. I teach keyboarding and emails and I send an email after I receive certain assignments. I believe that I will start to do that with EVERY class because that is a great way to individualize the comments and get to know the students. Some of the students really like it. the only draw back that I see is that not all of the students have computers at home, They all have email addresses; they just do not check their mail as often as they should. On the other hand other students have the most up to date technology
It is important to follow up on student assignments because it gives students a type of feedback on their work. Students want to know how well they are doing in their classes and if we give them feedback, we can let them know if they are on the right track or not. Feedback allows us to refocus students who have lost focus and keep the focus of those who are on track.
Hi Cynthia,
I love your thought process based on following up with student assignments. You are certainly on point, and you made some valid listings. I can tell your students really matter to you.

Hi Roger,
Great response! When both teacher and student feel a need to do their part when it comes to an assignment and urgency is placed on the task.

Hi Beverly,
Grading an assignment motivates students to do the assignment.

Students may tend to think we do not grade homework assignments when we do not provide feedback. It is important to follow up on assignments or the student will feel like there is no importance in completing the work.
By collecting and reviewing homework and assignments, students become aware that these assigned tasks are important, required, and apply to their grade as part of the curriculum. It also shows that the teacher is accountable. In turn, the students should feel more accountable. Additionally, this helps good and bad students be more prepared for class.
I follow up on assignments and readings for couple of different reasons. One is because my students are important to me and their work is important to me. I praise them for good work and make corrections/redirections if their work is not exactly on target. Second the students like to know that the instructor has taken the time to read the work they submit. The morale of class improves when an instructor ackowledges by some comment or action that they have read the assignments. I do not give busy work. If I don't have time to read it then I won't assign it. Also, if it is not relevant I won't assign it.
If you do not check that students have completed assingments, many will eventually stop doing them. I make it a priority to check homework at the beginning of class and then we go over the answers together. Making assignments and not checking them may also hurt your credibility with the students, showing them that you are not serious about the work you assign.
It is important to follow up with homework and assignments; homework and assignments are assessment and reinforcement and the students also learn responsibility.
Hi Diane,
That's right, your students will know that when you give an assignment that you are serious, and you expect them to do it, otherwise there will be repercussions. We have to let our students know that we are serious when it comes to them getting a quality education so that they can become superb employees.

All my assignments have due dates. I write it down on the board both the due dates of today's and tomorrow's assignments. If they don't turn in within the due dates I take out 10%. The later they turn in more points is taken out.
If I don't follow up, the students will feel the assignments are not important or required and the students won't complete them. Following up will help unprepared students to know they need to be prepared.
The follow up is important because of several reasons:
* To show consistency with the instructions given in class.
* Incentive an active class where the students can ask questions about their assignments and readings.
* To motivate the students to come prepared to the class.
I think that it is important to follow up on assignments and readings for two main reasons. First, it is all about consistency in the classroom. Students are more motivated when they know what to expect and when they are rewarded for their work and effort. I use this for attendance too! Students know that I will post a question on the whiteboard relating to the previous night's homework assignment. This question remains on the board for the first ten minutes of class and is then erased. Students who hand in their answer receive a bonus point for that week's quiz. I rarely have students walking into class late :-) Second, being committed to a deadline is new to most students. It's good practice to hold them accountable for assignments in a guided setting so that when they are out on their own in their field of employment they have this important lesson under their belt.
Hi Howard,
I can tell you care about your students. Students need immediate feedback so that they will know how they are progressing. Continue to work with those at-risk students; they need us too.
Patricia
It is important to follow up assignments and readings to show that I am serious. I return all graded weekly assignments with immediate feedback and offer help to those unprepared students who are at risk.
Hi Ernest,
Some students will do the bare minimum to get by. If they can find answers without reading the chapter, they will. It was very smart on your part and it shows you have the students success at heart by making such valuable change. At times, we have to change things if they are not working in the best interest of the student.
